I Stopped Using Asian Martial Arts Because of Cultural Appropriation?

I'm half Peruvian and half afro-brazillian. In my college, many Asian students seem to hate the idea when a non-asian person (especially white people) uses Asian martial art (kung fu, taekwondo, karate etc). These Asian Sjws are more extremist then the BLM activist in my university.

There was recently a martial arts club started in my university sponsored by a local mma gym and many Asian students are doing the whole "non-asians especially white people using our martial arts they are appropriating something that was meant for us"... Many of these East-Asian students actually follow the teachings of people such as "Wong Jack Man" who hated bruce lee for teaching white people secrets of the Chinese fighting system and considered Bruce Lee a "race traitor"

I don't buy into any sjw cultural appropriation ideas. The martial arts I grew up with was taekwondo (korean martial arts) because my father was a black belt and taught it to me. Then I furthered my learning in taekwondo dojos. But I have come to resent and hate many of these Asian students for being this way, for the way they treat non-asians especially my white friends, that I actually don't want to use any Asian martial arts anymore. So now the only martial arts I use and learn from are non Asian martial arts like Rumi Kami (a Peruvian martial arts) and Capoeira (an afro-brazilian martial arts), martial arts from my own race and culture.

Many times these Asian students like to claim stuff like "if it wasn't for us Asians Connor mcgregor wound't be a good fighter since he uses Asian martial arts"... I don't buy into cultural appropriation sjw crap but when many Asians students in my college act this way I don't wanna touch any east Asian thing with a stick, I grow to resent them and hate their culture as well. I would never treat a person like that, I would never make someone feel bad for wanted to be part of my afro-latino/hispanic culture.

Sounds like they have made things personal. However, I think they feel that the mixed martial arts community tends to ignore the major influence of Asian martial arts in MMA, so this is their way to protest. In fact many mixed martial artists tend to scoff at many Asian martial arts, despite Asian martial arts being the most commonly used martial arts in MMA.

I think the Asians you refer to feel that the MMA community is ungrateful to the contributions Asians made to the sport. I’m not trying to excuse their behavior but it’s better to try see things from their perspective.

I understand they don’t care if their martial arts get mixed but what I’m saying is that perhaps that there is more to the problem than just simple xenophobia. Perhaps these Asian students are practicing something known as displacement, which is basically taking out their anger on people who have nothing to do with their original issues.

I’ve actually talked with a few people who have similar attitudes to those students you describe, what I learned is that they don’t like how other cultures are trying to claim Asian martial arts as their own and they don’t like how some Asian martial arts are often laughed at in the MMA community. This is why I think they are so hostile, they are displacing their anger.

I’m not excusing their rude behavior though and I think somebody should try to talk to them and try to convince them to be more tolerant.

Thoughts? If you disagree with cultural appropriation and can present arguments against it, then do so.
Ask why it's OK for Asians to appropriate other cultures. Explain how 'cultural appropriation' is basically the modern equivalent of separate drinking fountains. Tell them that if they feel like their culture is being stolen, they're perfectly welcome to leave - move somewhere where their culture is the dominant culture.

Be true to yourself, and don't let a few scrawny Asian Boys cheat you out of a family tradition. They want you to stop. You're giving into their demands by giving up what you love. The only way to properly respond to this racist concoction is to continue using the methods you learned anyway.

Who cares if they're extremists? If they threaten to beat you up, find a place which is heavily surveillanced or perhaps get someone to record it, and let them take you down. That way, they can be reported, and be arrested immediately.

Why not switch to Savate which is a French martial art or Russian Sambo. An awful lot of MMA is boxing and wrestling so it's more like ancient greek/Macedonian martial art pankration. Europeans have had martial arts for thousands of years as has South America. If these Asian students don't practice martial arts they should shut up and also a chineese guy has no right to talk about the taekondo or karate as cultural appropriation.
A lot of traditional martial artists don't like MMA because it's full contact and shows what traditional martial arts techniques work and what doesn't. Everytime a kung fu or karate guy meets an MMA nearly always the MMA guy wins because the MMA guy is able to exploit some weakness in traditional martial arts.

Some of the best people in my country are white, as is one of my senseis (the other two are asian). What matters is what you can learn from the other person. More people means more opponents and viewpoints and approaches. It is this diversity that can give you the insight you need to move forward
