Since you are the one that made the first move, that sent a mixed message, gave him false hope and set the stage to hurt him. You were better off never talking to him again and just ignoring his calls if he called you. If you really didn't want to hurt him you would have just lived your life, never talked to him ever again, and moved on completely. Breaking up with someone is all the "goodbye" that you need. Now you got his attention, and that's what you really wanted in the first place. So tell him to move on and find another girl. Tell him what he did "wrong" in the relationship so he won't make the same mistakes with the next girl. He's not going to be able to take it deep down, but telling him will at least put it in his mind. Bottom line is that he will be hurt if he isn't over you, especially since you reached out ot him...
