The first time I took a public bus ride when I was a teenager with a friend as a dare.
How do you feel about public transportation? How the society in your place view it?
Me I don't have much of a choice but to take public transportation as much as I might hate it because of my vision being bad and getting worse. I try driving only in empty parking lots just to keep the skill up if ever a time of emergency is needed but other than that I can't because of my bad vision and let me tell you public transportation God damn sucks balls massive balls but dealing with the expense of a car is a trade off as well with car payments if its not paid off, car taxes, insurance, registration, inspection, gas and maintance, and bad drivers. OTOH taking the bus, bus being late or to early which happens often, overcrowded, people who pull the cord every 5 feet just to get out, screaming adults who swear or screaming kids who aren't disciplined, bus going 5 - 15mph and not stepping on the accelerator, having to leave extremely early to go places, bus sometimes doesn't show up when its suppose to, people who are sick and still go on the bus making other people sick. You're caught in a damned if you do damned if you don't situation unless you take the subway which unfortunately my state doesn't have.
oh and with regards to taking the bus you also have to deal with bums who don't take showers or wipe their asses after they take a shit (not joking when i say that either) and kids who shit in their pants as well (again not joking when i say this either) and it stinks up the whole bus. and when you deal with the hub of a public transport the bus drivers are complete jerks the supervisors are useless and tons of bums and panhandlers have drug deals going on in the restrooms and drugs are used in the restroom as well. I've seen this numerous times and if the restroom is locked up (in my state they close it from 11am to 1pm) the bums will find another restroom usually in city hall's mayors office to shoot up their drugs. Its a damn shithole dealing with public transportation.
Those peasants.
One more thing I forgot to add is having to dish out between 35 - 60 dollars every 5 years for a license renewal on top of all the other added expenses that come with owning a car. And fighting and arguing with sleazy mechanics over major repairs that you can't do yourself and arguing with mechanics over cars passing and not passing inspections. Trust me both situations God damn suck.
no i definitely do not feel ashamed to use public transportation. in fact i tend to feel good about myself when i do so
why? unless its the subway why? i dread taking the bus all the time for the problems i mentioned above
@RobLovesDemi4ever i mean those are all things that are characteristic of public transportation but it just has to be understood going into it. but those things shouldn't make someone feel ashamed rather than just illustrates some of the cons of public trans.
Not ashamed, especially since everyone rides the subway in New York; you'd stand out more driving your own car, and then there's the high cost of parking, and the constant traffic jams, it just doesn't make sense unless you're leaving the city. That said, people are gross, and all the germs I could do without, but there isn't much choice about that.
"People are gross" I have to agree with you there.
I've watched/seen a lot of gross things, too many to recall, but I do remember on more than one occasion people sneezing into their hand and putting that same hand back on the pole. :S Hence why I avoid holding anything as much as possible unless absolutely necessary, and even then only with gloves.
That is so nasty! Eww!
Immune system of champions though...
Nah because I'm young and it's illegal for me to drive sooooooo...
And I'd rather take the bus than walk over an hour from school to my house in the freezing cold Canadian winter.
I assume it must be safe there to allow a young lady all by herself to take a bus ride. Honestly I would never allow my daughter unaccompanied to walk or ride bus to school. I don't mind waking up early every single day just to ensure her safety and driving through traffic jam to pick her up from school.
Please always stay safe ❤️
Yeah, I live in a very safe place. :)
And my parents work very late so I'm out of options until I'm old enough to drive.

No since i rely on it a lot because of my inability to drive.
Driving is overrated, anyways. Too many stupid people on the road. Even if you were super careful, there’s always that risk you’ll get hurt or killed. And the money spent each month on gas and insurance... UGH!
I don’t feel ashamed but I also don’t feel good because who knows the kind of germs are lurking on the hand rails of buses, seats in taxis, floors of subway trains, etc. It’s congested and if an emergency were to happen, it might not tactically be the best place find yourself in. I don’t like public transportation for a variety of reasons, but feeling ashamed is not one of them. I also feel like someone who takes public transportation might be more apt to become sick, because of being around many people on the daily, congested in a relatively small space, and the accumulation of germs in these places.
Public transportation is used a lot in certain locations. Near the city where i live, the primary mode of transportation is the bus system. They want to keep down the polution as much as possible, and the buses are actually very comfortable and clean. In places where the bus system is less developed, it can be seen as embarrassing or the like when you have to ride it. When people have their own personal transportation, it just seems odd to need to ride a bus or the like.
Honestly, public transportation is quite handy and can be good when getting around a place you don't know very well as there are others that use the bus often and know their way around. Just consider that it's just a mode of transportation and you have to do what you have to do to get from point A to point B.
I don't have a problem with public transportation, I preferred to ride the bus or train when I lived in the U. S.. I did not have to worry about finding parking, I did not have to stress out over bad drivers and I could stop off and have a couple of beer after work and not have to worry about being pulled over by the police for DUI.
I also became friends with a few people, I met using public transport. I would still be using public transport here where I live now, if it was not for the industrial acts taken by the transport union a few years ago. That made it necessary for me to get my own personal transportation, to get to and from work.
But I still use public transportation, when I am going out drinking with friends.
I live in a place where it's considered very normal. To be honest I'm not sure why anyone would be ashamed of that unless they have already experienced wealth and aren't used to be looked down upon.
Hmmm you have a good point there.
I live in a big city and having a car is a hassle. my dad owns a car and whenever he drives somewhere he has to look for a parking space for 20-30 minutes. Even if he just wants to park somewhere near his apartment.
I don't even know how to drive and I love taking the subway.
What? Ashamed? It's my favorite and only method of transportation. I use the subway / metro everyday. I'm a railfan (someone who likes trains). I take videos of trains as a hobby. Using public transportation is nothing to feel bad about. It doesn't mean you're poor or lame. It's the most convenient form of transit for some people. Why buy a car and drive through traffic when you can hop on a train and pass everyone on the streets?
No! Why would I? Everybody had to use public transportation at some point. Yeah, sure. Having a car often means personal freedom, but its also a big responsibility too. It's expensive either way to travel. You have to do what is best for you as well as being careful while traveling.
Oh yeah, I'm feeling you girl. Like eww! Poor people! ;)
I think you need to examine where these messages come from.
No, I don't - besides, you need to be a demi millionaire to afford some of the public transport here. I drive and use trams where it's not so convenient to drive.
I never really thought of public transit being "for peasants."
It really boils down to how effective the public transit system is where you live. If it can get you everywhere you need to go, then that's great. Most in the US however are designed to get you to work and back, so running multiple errands throughout the day without having a car to keep stuff in between stops can be a challenge.
I like public transportation. I never have to worry about traffic find a place to park, have car stolen or wreaked from the parking lot, and it is a lot cheaper.
I used to public trans every day till I brought a farm. Now I just live to far away for public trans otherwise I would still use it today.
If you live in a city like Chicago, New York, Toronto, taking the transit is actually convenient because you avoid car payments, maintenance on your car, gas, and insurance. But I will admit, when you get your married and you have kids, you need a car to get around.
I take the tram (or Luas we call it here in Ireland) as the most convenient transport to the city centre among other places (& I don’t drive), but again there’s no shame in it; it’s popular among everyone of every social class.
And I took the bus for 30 mins to and from college for 2 years back in the day, again commonplace for any student... so zero shame.
Everywhere else I go usually doesn’t require public transport. I either walk or get a ride over
I'm a little embarrassed about using food stamps. But not public transportation. I'm not saying you should be ashamed of using food stamps but I see why people are... I used to donate plasma but I'd rather tell people that then tell them my family is poor and on food stamps, that shit is embarrassinng...
No of course not. One I don’t care what others think, even if they think I’m low class for utilizing public transportation no one is going to say it to my face. Not only that public transportation cuts down on all these emissions, so for someone to look down on you when they’re polluting the ozone is pretty ridiculous. Honestly I’d use it myself if I could, but I work too far of a distance that it would take me forever to get to work that I’d be lateeveryday.
Huh? No. Why would I? That's weird. Public transit should be used a lot, as it takes more cars off the road, is cheaper, and is more environmentally friendly.
I agree with you 100%! Our teachers preach all that but until now none of us ever use them. I remember getting weird look if I ever suggested that to a friend, they'll be like "Why? I can ask my driver to pick you up from home."
Only in US.
Public transportation is supposed to be the greatest thing but somehow the US just destroyed it.
Why? Most people responded to this question are from US and they are ok with it.
Hell nah. I hate fooling with my car and I hate driving. I ride the local city bus OFTEN. And I do not give a fuck about what the next person has to say. They are welcomed to either drive me around themselves or shut the hell up.
I like public transportation. It’s far more convenient than owning a car in the city, it’s better for the environment than driving, and I can’t drive anyway since my eyesight is bad enough that it wouldn’t be safe.
I hate using public transport. I hate waiting at the bus stop, I hate having to find the right change, I hate sitting on the bus with glue sniffers. It's nothing to do with being a snob and I'm not concerned about it affecting my public image. The only people who will see you using public transport are people using public transport.
