This law applies to government works residing outside of the US while having the baby that ARE NOT CITIZENS THEMSELVES. That's the key part you missed. Their kids are not AUTOMATICALLY GIVEN CITIZENSHIP. Instead, they will fall under INA 322, which considers them to be residing outside the U. S. and requires them to APPLY FOR NATURALIZATION.

Damn guys this has nothing to do with racism. In the UK if a British Citizen has a child with non Citizen the child is not automatically granted citizenship anymore - because this is the case with few of my family. We have even stricter rules here.

First and foremost Trump did not make this law (presidents don't make laws (the closest thing to that is executive actions), they do support it and help pass them but they don't actually make laws that's the job of congress).
Second the law extends only to US soldiers who are not legal citizens i. e. a non citizen cannot have a child who is a citizen. So if the person was in the military and they for what ever reason where not a US citizen to begin with, their child would not be a US citizen, if a soldier became a naturalized citizen but did so AFTER the child was born, that citizen ship is not conferred to the child. So while you can argue whether or not this is a reasonable change (I'm on the fence about it, after all if they are in the military they are protecting OUR country and as such I think you have some room to argue that this should earn them and their child a fast track to citizenship (though I don't know enough details about this so it could be I am mistaken) its a far cry different then saying all soldiers (its a very tiny fraction of soldiers who also are not technically citizens themselves)).

My friend's son actually found out his dad never filled out the paperwork when he was born in Germany and that he wasn't an U. S. citizen. He lived over 30 years assuming he was until he went to get a passport. His dad was in the military when he married my from who is German. They divorced when she was in her 30s.

That's not actually the way that it is. The process has been changed for them to become American citizens. Part of the reason there was such an uproar about this, is the Trump administration had made many racist comments and done many racists acts, and it's easy to believe that when they change something re. even legal immigrants, that it's being done with bad motives.

Obviously, you didn't actually READ the article. It refers to children of NON-CITIZENS in the military or serving overseas. If either parent is a citizen at the time of birth, then the children are, too. So you'd have to be the child of a two non-citizens, at least one of whom is in the military, before this "change" applied.

One material word left off by the questioner is the word "automatically" it does not mean they are precluded from being a citizen. Secondly assuming whoever the parent is fights for us is an assumption without evidence. If they mean the US citizen, they could be a government worker and not a fighter. If the assumption it is the other party to the pregnancy fought for us there is no basis for that at all. They of course could be, but also could be anyone. Examples, a waiter/waitress, cab driver, business executive or fighter for us. I think the questioner did well in asking to understand.
