1.5K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. "God will recognize his own" is the one I'm familiar with, and was just his excuse to want to have anyone killed. Or was laziness because he knew trying to sift through all the heretics would take so much time. He was especially brutal in trying to wipe out all the Cathars. No doubt, I myself did not agree with their indeed heretical beliefs, but they literally did nothing to bother anyone else and stayed to themselves.
I think Innocent III had to be one of the most vicious and ungodly popes Europe ever had, if not the worst. This man was vile and carnal in so many ways it actually shocks me that he could be like that yet still be kept on the "throne." The dude was an utter asshole.11 Reply- +1 y

This is just like "smite them down amalek" it is because at the time it was an attempt to overcompensate for a problem and after they realised this was a poor approach them changed it

+1 yProof that neither the pope nor the Catholic church represented true Christianity: Jesus Christ said "Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword" (Matthew 26:52). Paul said "Avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife. And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel..."(2 Timothy 2:23,24).

1.9K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. It was the seige of Béziers, against the Cathars. The problem was that they were afraid that many who believed the heresy (essentialy Gnosticism) would claim that they were Catholic to avoid execution. So the order went out, as the gnostic Christians were a threat to the centralized power of the church (the belief in personal revelation/the ability to bypass clergy)
14 Reply- +1 y
Thank you!!!
Also they believed God was evil (Rex Mundi, King of the World).
Was it Beziers or Montsegur? - +1 y
Having read a lot of Gnostic scripture it was a lot more complicated than that. The issue was that the Church wanted to consolidate it's power, be able to sell forgiveness, in essence keep their boot on the necks of the people. Gnosticism tought direct revelation, that man didn't need a priesthood to intervene. It was a direct attack on the power base. Catholicism tried to wipe that entire idea off of the planet, and every time it tried it would pop up again in a different way and in a different place. It's hard to argue against personal experiences and Devine intervention in the minds of those who either experienced something along those lines or had spoken with someone who had. Further pagan beliefs allowed for direct interaction between man and god so the idea was contrary to folk beliefs.

The church sold indulgences

Ever heard of Alexander VI? He was a wealthy Spanish merchant with two kids who decided he wanted to be Pope. He divorced his wife one day, got ordained as a priest the next day and was made Pope the day after that. (Slight exaggeration, but not by much.) - +1 y
You mean the Borgias... horrible histories did a song on it (its a British series of books that inspired an educational kids show that later got adapted for adults on BBC2 as adults started watching it)
- +1 y
@jamesgoldman I do mean the Borgias
- +1 y
Yeah more people have heard of them by name rather than the papal role... one of the few times where a name is more remembered than a title
- +1 y
@jamesgoldman their name was Borja in Spanish
