A.) Probably because they know that Communism was never achieved in any country in the history of the world.
Reminder: Communism is a classless, stateless and moneyless society - No country in the world has ever had such a society.
In reality, Communism is a society like in Star Trek, not like in North Korea.

B.) As for the Socialism, it's just a path to Communism, but it failed because it's flawed.
Socialism is not the same as Communism, and it's still prone to corruption.
The most successful way to accomplish Communism in the future is the Scandinavian model of economy (Welfare state economy, mixture of market economy and social state).
The only successful type of actual Socialism is the Chinese Market Socialism (Combination of Socialism and partially free market).

C.) As for the ignorant people who think that Communism is something "very bad":
Stalinism is not a Communism, it's a totalitarian dictatorship based on a "Cult of personality" (just like the regime in North Korea), and most people don't want to live in such a restrictive country.
System like that was inspired by crazy egotists who wanted to impose their opinion on masses of people by force... it has nothing to do with equality, nor with the classless society.
People who are falsely displaying Communism like this are usually fascists and/or nazis, as well as the imperialists, royalists and capitalist - people who hate equality... basically, the oppressors, aligned with church (or any other religious/brainwashing institution).

1. It would entail them actually having to sacrifice something, when they would rather the sacrifice be taken up by others.
2. They know these communist countries aren't good places, but they're pretentious enough to believe that they could do it better.

It sounds good because free is good to them. The loudest socialists are actually angry working and low income people who are sick of being slaves to another person's profit. Also, people in the US who are fighting for socialism are fighting for things like universal healthcare, affordable education, housing rights, union representation, worker owned enterprises, the stop of lobbying in government from big money interests etc. If anyone has an issue with those things it is they who are on the wrong side of things.
