1. That's basically the military. But, 2. I do think that'd be interesting as many governments halfway do that already so why not? I see this as a free market, libertarian, capitalist, but it'd be more last resort. Blunt truth is these guerenteed jobs would have to be exactly as you described but with possibly quite low pay as there are taxes going to it.
The government already provides guaranteed jobs to some people & all you have to do is be a professional couch potato & hump the system & you even get paid. Being on Welfare & collecting is a full time job for some people. The second job the government guarantees is a professional break taker & those people quit their jobs & hump the unemployment system.
That sounds like a nice idea. But what job would they have? If they do nothing then they aren't working. You shouldn't pay someone for doing nothing all day. They'll need to be helpful in some way... what is the simplest form of help... the unemployment paycheck people always need more phone callers. Last time I called I was on hold for hours.
Update: This is a too big of a questions for G@G. Experts have been trying to effectively solve this problem for years. You're not gonna get your answer from people on some website.
And what happens if the homeless person is a poor worker? Then you need to fire them and now you see why they were homeless before. Depends on the person.
Then government is not needed. Any private business can give a job. The homeless person just needs a shower, a t-shirt, pants and boots. Rent the clothes to them for $5/day. The ones who really want to work will leap at the chance. A lot of the problems we have is because people let government take over too many responsibilities.
To this day, in many countries there's zero homeless because nobody gives a F and won't baby them & the potentially homeless know it's not worth it to go that route so they don't.
I am a socialist but the government should not provide a guaranteed job. Simply because there is already high demand for workers in any field outside of glamorous industries. So even though I am socialist, it's not necessary at this stage.
The government should assist people in finding these jobs though
What example will the present people set if people get guranteed jobs. They will at first work hard but later they will stop working and become lazy. Because they will be confident that they won't lose the job even if they don't work. I think government should provide temporary jobs to everyone. The duration and income should depend on the current situation the employee is facing.

The problem is they don't want to work. They get everything free from the government or Pan handling and get to sit in their tent on the beach all day doing drugs. Start enforcing camping laws and not allow this and you'll fix it homeless problem you'll see the homeless problem is the the biggest in area that just allow it
Plenty of voluntary work around, I started a litter picking group in my area, also volunteer as a safety marshal supporting any blue light service with anything they ask of us, so much gets done by volunteers that just wouldn't get done at all otherwise imho,,,
I think there should some kind of public servant job that provides the basics as an option for homeless but the Real issue that the so called homeless on the west coast are actually drug addicts, who steal to get their fix and they don't go to jail from more then a day.
So let me get this strait. You want me a hard working tax payers to fund work programs with my money. That will take work away from other hard working tax payers who are already doing that work. And give jobs to completely unqualified people to do a half added job on the tax payers dime.
Without looking at your age I am guessing you are very young because you are rather naive. The federal government is the largest employer in the country with almost 25 million employees. You do realize that people aren't going to wake up at 4 am everyday to work for 9 or 10 hours not including commute in order to earn a paycheck that is taken away and given to people that wash cars?
I think it's a great idea. Instead of having illegal aliens picking crops, just have the government pay Americans minimum wage to do it. The government would be saving money.
@kimmykimmy - are you dim? Get off your ass and apply for a job to pick crops. Why the hell should the government pay you to get off your ass and do it.
No, it's retarded. I won't say socialist, because no socialist government managed to get even close to that, even when it tried. It's basically micromanaging society.
Chronic homelessness in the west isn't caused by lack of jobs, it's mostly a mental illness problem.
I’m on the fence. I think everyone should work if they can but I’m not a fan of forced government mandates.
I live in an area where the homeless come because nobody does anything about them so I do think those people should be put through treatment and mandated a job. But at the same time it’s not the governments job to force anything on anyone.
It makes a lot of sence. How it works is it gets in contacts with local non profits to find the work and the government supplements the pay. So it's a great opportunity for the individual and helps with local needs.
Bro, it’s not just that. You know what minimum wage is? You know what student loans are? I’m dedicated asf. Earlier this year I was pursuing my education while working a job and dealing w emotional abuse. I moved out of there (luckily) and I’m crashing at somebody’s place rn until I can afford rent. I work hard. Real hard. Working on my career on my days off and working past midnight on my days working my current job. A few months ago, I was struggling to put food on the table and that’s not the case no more bc my momma is helping me out now with groceries. I just got a promotion too bout to make $12 an hour. How’s that sound? Exactly. If I don’t get enough financial aid I gotta put college on pause til I’m 24 and can qualify for a guaranteed pell grant. Bc education is very expensive, especially when you’re attending the number one college in America for your major (yeah that’s right). I got fired from my last job for being trans, and it’s not that many opportunities as a trans woman of color but I take em all. So please just shut up rn you privileged egg
I much prefer you be accountable for yourself. I got 2 disorders I was born with. One weakens my hands and feet and my other one has me on blood thinners. I’m still able to go above and beyond at work. Why can’t others?

Have you ever observed how government run projects go? Governments are essentially like opposite King Midas. Everything they touch turns to shit.
If you want to help the poor, you reduce government and with this the limitations on liberties and tax burdens.

I just like the conversation

Yes they will be fired
It’s an opportunity not a handout. If the person was satisfactory in the work they can come back later if needed

So i say round them all up and put them on a rehab island far away from us.

I'm gonna have to go with a big fuck off

Is there an echo in here? I just said that.

@GentleLittleLady
I have a job, moron.

No. Because that would create jobs which don't offer any additional value. You don't need to create useless jobs just so that people have a job.
There is always something productive to do unless you live in utopia. My community needs litter pick up badly and landscaping maintenance
It doesn't make sense to force people to do a job which they don't want to do and which doesn't give them satisfaction. Jobs need to be meaningful.
Thats.. Basically Japan.
The result? Thousands of deaths from suicide each year due to overworking
When people are poor it is usually for a good reason. They are incapable of working reliably, so nobody wants them.
It's not a matter of giving them a job, it's a matter of them changing behavior.

@Chrissydamusicgirl So how has that mindset worked for you so far? At what point in your life do you expect it to be different?
