I'm all for tiny cars with tiny engines, like Japanese Kei cars.
However, the recent trend of putting tiny engines in normal sized cars is a terrible idea that only works under laboratory conditions. Real-world fuel economy is never close to what is claimed, and more importantly, is usually worse than for the same car with a larger engine. Plus reliability is worse. I drive an old Civic with a 2.2L diesel, and wouldn't swap if for the new model with a 1.0L petrol.
If it were up to me, I'd have road tax brackets determined by the vehicle's size, not emissions. Tiny Kei cars would be exempt, and owners of big SUVs would pay a fortune. Far too many people are driving around in cars that are just far too big - that means they use more energy (even if that's electricity, it still has to come from somewhere, and it won't all be renewable), as well as causing huge amounts of road congestion and parking problems. Its ridiculous how much modern cars have grown (roads and parking spaces have not) - they say it's to increase strength for safety in a crash, but then the whole reason you need increased crash strength is because everyone else is driving around in 2-ton tanks as well now.

Try driving a 1 litre engines car at 70 mph for 8 hours non stop. Then try driving a 3 litre for the same journey at same speeds.
overtaking is allowed.
see who gets there first, feels the best and most relaxed quiet drive.
Also at 70 mph, most 1 litre cars struggle with fuel economy as they are at the top end of their revs.
Also most people doing that journey would do 80mph or faster.
80mph or 90mph in a 1 litre is fairly meh.
Also say driving through Wales or Scotland twisty roads, that extra power gives great acceleration out of twisty bits and it’s shit loads of fun.
Using the same argument, why by 1.0 litre car when you can get smaller engines and 3 cylinders?

Why do people buy 60" TVs when even a 32" is more than sufficient to see what's on it? Why do people buy £1000 smartphones when there's perfectly functional smartphones for £200? Why do people spend a fortune on designer labels when you can buy cheap clothes that serve the same function? Why do people buy private jets when there's plenty of commercial airlines they could travel on?
Because Western society thrives on consumerism. Form over function. When you have to go out on the highway it is nice to be able to get up to speed quickly. It is also nice to be able to keep up with the flow of traffic. If you ever tow a trailer you need the extra horsepower. Also if you have a more powerful engine it does not have to work as hard so it will last longer.

I've never seen a 1L engine that I can haul stuff with, or plow snow with.
It's a nice thought, but I need my truck, so I'll happily stick with my V8. Why the hell would anyone even consider buying a car with any less than 8 cylinders? Do you have any idea how much tire smoke 650 hp can make without getting anywhere near 70mph? :D
Because they are better, you clean haven't been in the back of a luxury land yacht with 4 litres under the hood... I've been in many and they need that to move
Dude, my lawnmower's got a 2.5L.
No 1L gerbil engine is going to haul my trailers.I used to have a 1.4 litre super mini. After 2 hours on the motorway, I was just losing the will to live. Noisy and hard work. Fine around town though.
my car has a 7 liter engine. I they made one with a 10 liter engine I'd get that. Many people love sports cars
In the US, you can't buy a 4 wheel vehicle with a 1 liter engine.
Depends what you use the car for. 1-litre is fine unless you want to tow a caravan.
Ca a 1 litre car tow a 21000 pound trailer?
Because you have not heard of "work" apparently.
1000 cc is too small for a bike, nevermind a car
Because they like to go fast.
Because you can.
