Voted D. Ms. Thunberg got her reputation because she started talking about the climate. Just a hunch, but as the father of one pre-schooler and two elementary school kids I think it more than fair to say that you could not swing a dead cat in a crowded school and hit anyone who would give a fig about climate change. It is not a factor in their lives.
In fact, I interviewed my pre-school daughter, and she basically had no comment. My second - our little cuddler - said, "Oh", and went on about his new friend at school. My oldest, age 9, - whose life motto is, "Why walk around obstacles when just walk through them?" - kept remarking about how he wants to play football tomorrow - for the Redskins.
It is not a factor and because someone plants a child in front of a camera and sets about theatrically wailing and gnashing teeth is no reason to take it seriously. It is the pointless prattle of an age that prefers moral exhibitionism to the hard business of actual thought and practical action.
If some child has been terrorized by his/her parents, that is between them and child protective services. As a matter of public policy and sensible analysis it has no significance and is the illusion of seriousness.
The answer to romanticism about the idealism of youth is to recall that children are pint sized versions of the adults they criticize. Their passions are transients and their interests even more so.
Today that young lady was weeping and sobbing about the temperature of the planet. Tomorrow she will be looking across the classroom at that cute boy. It is that deep - which means that it is not deep at all. Perfect utter twaddle and it should be treated as such.
Besides, as someone once said, "Since our society equates happiness with youth, we often assume that sorrow, quiet desperation, and hopelessness go hand in hand with getting older. They don't. Emotional pain or numbness are symptoms of living the wrong life, not a long life."
Whether she was pure as the driven snow or the puppet of some nefarious powers that be is entirely irrelevant. What is rather more horrifying is that grown adults, who in theory at least should be raising children and not being raised by them, are taking this young lady with solemn seriousness and granting her, and her pre-adult compatriots, a degree of credibility that is rooted in a silly emotional romantic sentimentalism rather than a hard analysis of the data and the cost/benefit calculations that come with it.
It is indeed surprising to see this youthism developing more and more.
However, this woman is no longer a child. She is 19 now.
However, these parents did not play their roles in letting this girl leave school to become an activist. Especially since by doing this they exposed their children to criticism and hatred from social networks and other social or media channels, which a child is not ready to face.
Greta Thunberg is ultimately just an activist like there are others on various social issues. She has become a "symbol" by the lack of judgment of the adults who let this child speak, sometimes even while being received by governments. As if his children's word became gospel.
But a subject much deeper than the person of Greta Thunberg deserves in the end a more in-depth and nuanced reflection, it is global warming.
It's hard to deny global warming, but what are the real solutions to this problem? The decline desired by the most extreme militants is not a serious solution. Renewable energies have to date, many defects, which in the end will not solve the problem.
We also need a historical perspective. In the history of humanity, there have been very large-scale climatic upheavals.
Once again, all of this deserves a deeper reflection beyond any dogmatism.

@Odile1323 You've thrown a lot out there so I will limit myself to a few key points.
People in general, and Americans in particular, have always had a tendency to romanticize youth. Think of the "youth culture" of the 1960s. A period curiously echoed in the current era. Indeed, note well that the youth who were protesting on the campuses and having love-ins in the 60s have now, in demographic terms, become the corporate leaders, politicians and cultural leaders of the current time. We've been here before.
Eventually, as the nation did by the late 70s, the nation will weary of it. Then will follow, as we had in the 80s and 90s, a period of relative - and it is ALWAYS relative - calm and stability with a renewed respect for tradition and our elders.
As to Ms. Thunberg, she is all of 19 - and began her "career" at an even younger age. Since when do prudent societies look to children to develop their public policies - and those that do generally get the mayhem not unlike we had in the 60s. She hardly knows what life is yet. Best we listen to those who are mature adults.
Finally, as to climate change, it is real. However, man's ability to influence, let alone control, the climate is distinctly limited. Also, our knowledge is equally limited. Recall that it was not long ago that the world was fretting over the coming global ice age.
Bottom line, our knowledge is limited and apt to change. Best the world approach these questions not with cackling hysteria, but with a prudent understanding of the limits of our knowledge and our capacity to control events.
Besides, how likely is it that a nation that cannot even balance its budge will be able to change the trajectory of the planet's weather?
She was raised by her parents to be and do exactly what she is doing! (Monkey see monkey do) She is too young and too close-minded crazy radical to even see it. Her flower child hippy tree hugging parent too high on pot to see their open strip mining to get metals needed to build their Battey homes cars and cities will and are destroying our planet much faster than fossil fuels! The fact these batteries solar panels and even windmills cannot even last 10 years! It will be a solution only when they can make them last!
I think she's impressive. She's gained such a big voice, at such a young age - inspired so many young people to care about a issue that impacts us all.
I think she has a lot of good points, maybe a little dramatic & exaggerated - but come on, that's the every day politician around the world.
What I'm disgusted by when it comes to her, is all the God damn adults who bully her & have been for years. Most of them hiding behind a screen - without caring for jackshit themselves or doing anything do improve the world.
she has inspired millions of teenagers to care about the environment. Her impact is HUGE. A whole generation of kids fighting fossil fuels is a very good thing
I dont know the exact details But there was a report back in 2002 that we are over polluting the world and by 2010 we will pass the point of no return In 2012 another report was made that man kind has passed the point of no return and no it will face the affects of its karma It's 2022 now and nothing has stopped for one single day

I haven't seen anything from her recently... Probably because she came off as WAYYYY too dramatic the one video I did watch of her when she first stepped into the political arena. I imagine she isn't as dramatic anymore since she isn't really being thrown in the spotlight anymore.

Anything to bring attention to the issue of climate change. The type of people that would hate a child for talking about climate change are usually Republicans who will deny man made climate change and existence anyway no matter how much logic and science you shove down their throat because they are owned in body and soul and mind by their corporate overlords and their anti environment propaganda
Only fools disagree with her. These people are the problem of the world. Selfish, destructive, non empathetic humans. We live on the beautiful planet , that gives us everything we need. Yet we want more.. keep taking and taking , but not giving back, not caring. She is right. Humans suck.

I feel sorry for her because she has a mental illness and has been manipulated by her political activist parents to pursue their ends. Hopefully someday she grows up and they let her be her own person
She was a child when she became really big so I just think of her as a kid and I hate that she had to deal with being in the public for her views that are part of a political agenda at a young age.
She has some kind of mental disability and was underage and here the parents are not thinking of her best interest to use her as a prop for some political movement.
