It is not only plastic that is ruining the ocean. Metals and toxins are also having a bad effect on the ocean. An example of a toxin polluting the ocean is mercury. When Coal combustion releases mercury into the atmosphere, the mercury washes down to the ocean (New Study Finds Ocean Pollution a Threat to Human Health, 2021). Since fish swim in the ocean, obviously, and a pregnant woman eats a fish that has mercury, her child will not develop well. The child will develop with a low IQ and behaviour problems.
So, as you can see, our actions come back to bite us. I really found the article interesting. :)

I read your question and the same exact thoughts go through my head and we are all so smart in certain different ways we know what's bad we know what's good and we allow the bad to keep happening over and over and over we are destroying ourselves our government was supposed to be protecting us it's doing nothing but taking from us and is allowing bad things to happen no matter if it's in our country or in another country without protesting it without doing something about it it's all about greed the next War we get into it's going to be about money and who controls the world with a new form of currency it's not going to be about protecting the planet it's going to be about greed it's selfishness we are self-destruction our self each and every day I think one day we all need to become one and fight for each other to make the planet a better place because I've got a permanent is not going to do it for us they're not going to protect us every government at every nation has their own agenda they only think what they want and not seeing the bigger picture where we are headed right off the cliff we are destroying the air we are destroying the water that we drink and when those two parts of life are no more are we make it so bad there is no fixing it just like driving your car this broken down and you keep driving it and driving and driving it until the wheels fall out that's where we are and we need to change everybody needs to change the matter who you are what country you're from we all need to change

Microplastics in the lungs? Yea it was a conspiracy theory passed along by the Alex Jones type crowd. I was hearing about that back in highschool in 2013 from some potheads.
Going off what they told me, plastic doesn't burn like paper or wood, it turns into microscopic dust that can float in the air for potentially thousands of miles.
If I remember right, it's the part where they recycle plastic and when they produce it. I feel like I remember them making a point of saying that the workers have to wear masks in the factories to protect them from the microplastics entering their lungs.
Which by the way is exactly what the paper these stories are coming from describes. Microplastics not just in the lungs like the conspiracy theories predicted, but it's also been found in the blood. (apparently)
Why would that be a conspiracy? Its common sense that eventually it will go up in the food chain and particles small enough will be suspended in the air. It shouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out lol a conspiracy should be something like the president is an alien or something lmfao 😂

he's done some great work and predicted a lot of stuff, but he's also almost totally insane so it's hard to listen to people who are die hard fans of the guy who take his word as gospel.
Also I think back in the day it was being called into question how much was really getting out there, what the actual harm was, could the lungs filter it out (like what? Lol obviously not)
I remember hearing everything from "it's population control" to "they're testing out how they might get nanobots/rfid chips into the population."
Personally, I think the companies are just cheap and didn't want to deal with it until they had to. This problem sounds like it would cost a lot of money to solve.

It’s not just the health risks that pollution causes. Half of the oxygen we breath comes from the ocean. If we destroy the ocean and it’s ecosystem, this planet will not sustain life. What the world is doing right now is extremely selfish and short-sighted.
I agree that we use far too much plastic. But the bigger problem has an obvious solution that no one ever wants to talk about.
We need power. More this year than ever before, and more than that next year, and the year after. Where does that power come from? Mostly from burning coal.
You want an electric car because you think you are helping the planet? You just shifted the fuel burning from your car to the power station 20 or 50 miles away (and let's not talk about the battery pack, because the mining for those rare toxic minerals is another issue.
What no one wants to talk about is nuclear power. Modern nuclear power plants create nearly no waste, and are exponentially safer than designs from the 50s and 60s, which is what most existing nuke plants were. Clean, safe, reliable energy with extremely little waste - but because "nuclear" is in the name, the very people who claim to want to look out for the planet are the first to protest against it.
Germany shut down its nuclear power plants, which, while older designs, still had a perfect safety record, and are now reliant on Russian coal and gas instead. That is NOT progress, that is massive regression.
We're no better in the US, having shut down our nuke plants too. We should have been replacing them with modern designs, but that just makes too much sense.

China's ocean is literally glowing blue with toxin, they just dump pollution they don't care. They've fished the oceans near them to near extinction, not that it matters cause they are toxic, and the just keep going out farther fishing more ocean bare of all fish, and they just dump loads of fishing nets when they're done with them.
The rest of the world could be zero pollution but it wouldn't matter if China don't change.

It's a sad but plain fact that the majority of people are careless with remains. I see that every day in my own neighbourhood. People are still more dirty when on vacation. The only things to be done are individually taking care of what we do with remains and trash, possibly try to produce less, and educate correctly children about the problem.
And like 99% of that waste comes from China, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and other overpopulating shithole countries in Southeast Asia and Africa that don't give a crap about the environment and simply dump all their trash in the water.

The UK ships a lot of rubbish to those countries. They recycle what they can (end up on aliexpress) then the rest they dump it to the ocean. But it's our rubbish mainly.
@Squaresquirrel The UK exports 0.5 million metric tons of plastic waste a year. All of European Union together produces 26 millions of tons of plastic waste, of which about 2.4 million are exported outside of the EU.
In comparison, China alone produces 78 million metric tons of plastic waste every year. It's not most, it's a tiny fraction that third world nations exaggerate to shift blame onto someone else.
Yes, I did know, saw the plastic island size of 7 Texas. Interesting that we pay a lot for recycling the rubbish and it ends up in the ocean. And this is why I keep saying you separating your rubbish will accomplish nothing until the big companies don't get their act together.

yes I knew that. I think there is too much packaging. A little tool is often packaged in a big plastic bubble several times the size of the item. Also glass bottles should me brought back. When I was a kid soda bottles used to be reused. Now people just throw them away.
You know they created a bacteria that consumes plastic and it could have solved this problem. But because the recycling industry makes billions per year hey don't use it. Mind you recycling dosen't recycle shit, it's a giant scam used make yuppies think they're making a difference when they aren't doing shit.
It’s not quite that simple. As these bacteria consume plastics, they release toxic by products into the environment which are just as harmful as the plastic itself. Finding a way to capture these toxins in a large scale and commercially viable way is the problem. We’re still probably years away from this being a reality.
I heard s several years ago that New York city and maybe more dump their garbage at sea! If someone disagrees. Please tell us where they dispose of it! I was raised in a time where it was profitable for a kid to pick up bottles and some other things to recycle. Candy or a movie!

Where does the mercury com from. Coal is a hydro carbon. Mercury is a heavy metal. A complex molicule.. Most power stations scrubb the omissions , If anything like that would not go out into the atmosphere, it can be used for other things..
Um coal has mercury in it? Also is a source for mercury in fish? So no not regardless of human activity because human activity is a major source of mercury in the environment as much as you people so badly want to continue to pollute and throw your shit out down river and not be responsible for it
