Do you think Putin is/was holding back hist best troops for a future offensive in Ukraine?

I've seen a lot of people argue that Putin has initially sent his week units in Ukraine to "soften up" the Ukrainian forces until his elite forces deliver the "knockout blow".

Well first of all, this doesn't exactly stand up to scrutiny...
Second, for +100 years that's not how war has been waged. The elite units go in first to break the enemy lines and you send the weaker units in afterward to mop up the disorganized enemy forces.
This tactic was first used by the Germans in WW1. Before, 1918, both sides were just sending wave after wave of men at the enemy trenches who time after time got mowed down by machine guns. The Germans tried something new with their shock troopers ("stormtroopers") to break the enemy lines to avoid a war of attrition.
