What do you think should be done about the obesity problem in America?

I’m starting to feel like some sort of political action should be taken to combat the obesity epidemic in my country.
I saw over the course of a work day at a pharmacy many obese adults and even clearly obese children under age ten.
I went into Walmart and saw a family of three all using a walker or mobility scouter because of their tremendous weight.
I’m starting to question if there should be some government action to combat obesity like we combat Covid.
Maybe higher taxes for fast food and tax deductions for using a gym.

Government is the problem. Before government started interfering with our lives including the food we eat, people were fat. Here is a photos from the 1950 only a couple are fat:

Get government out of our lives and stop their laws that promote genetically modified food and growth hormones fed to livestock in the milk we drink and the meat we eat and obesity will go away. It would also help if we eliminated busing and allowed children to go outside, and to go to playgrounds, etc., without adult supervision like it was in the 1950s.

@Texaskid1 Never mind. You may be right. The photos show up when I Googled "1950 photos." However, when I went back and looked the description, the second photo is a recent photo.

I know with absolute certainty I am right. I have been an enthusiast of old vintage pictures since I was in high school. I could scan any picture and tell you in 5 seconds what decade of the 20th century is is from.

Look at the cloths , the cars, the technology, the food and even the waistline ( notice that in the old pic almost every is slim. Obesity did not become a thing until about 20 years ago. )

@Texaskid1 You are certainly right about the 2nd photo because per the Google description it is recent. I don't know about the 1st photo because it doesn't show on Google image search and that doesn't make any sense. Regardless, thanks to your reply, I learned that when I Google a photo search, all the photo may not match what I typed to search for. I'll will remember that in the future.

In any event, we agree that decades ago obesity was as big a problem.

As an American, other people's eating habits astonish me. For example, when I visit with my in laws, they will would a greasy breakfast with sausages and bacon, eat fast food for lunch, and then eat pizza for dinner. I stayed there for a week and felt bloated and disgusting because there weren't any healthy options to eat out. I got upset again on a road trip, because my only options were fast food. It's crazy to me how people just live like this. It's most Americans though. As for a solution, we need better options. Healthy food can taste good. The government can provide tax credits and provide incentives for healthy food establishments to produce and compete with fast-food.

Make Coke, Pepsi and similar toxins illegal.
Make it a crime for parents to let their children get fat unless there is a good medical reason for it. Make it child abuse, which is what it is.
The government is always looking for new things to tax, so put a hefty tax on corn syrup and similar deadly substances.
Make it illegal for companies to do anything like fat-is-beautiful type of advertising.
Pull the medical license of any doctor who doesn't encourage fat people to lose weight.

In France all junk food is more expensive because of a special taxes but the healthy food is also very expensive so it's kinda pointless. Poor people can only eat potato and pasta.

I actually watched a documentary about overweight issues over the world.
There was a section about fast food companies in France making computer games to get around regulations about targeting kids.

too kids don't really need computer or anything to like junkfood since everyone actually eat junk food so they're gonna have a taste of them when they're really small.
My family gave me coke to drink as a baby cause they forgot to take water and only had coke (and sometime others soda while I was still small child)

My father did but it was become he found I had gained too much weight so I wasn't allowed to there anymore.

I’m guessing when you go in Carrfore or other large stores in France there aren’t a lot of people on scooters?

No but funny today I just saw a family of three obese person (which is rare, first time I see this since many years).
People where I live are generally too skinny rather than chubby.
There's no scooters here it doesn't exist in France

I mean we could start with a social initiative. But unfortunately that’s “fat-phobic” and you can be cancelled for suggesting people are overweight. I’ve also heard that exercise is a form of white supremacy so definitely don’t want to be associated with that.

Don't allow growth hormones in animal feed and don't allow genetically modified food. And, eliminate school busing so children must walk to and from school, require schools to have 30 minutes of outside play twice each day in schools, and allow children of any age to play outside and go to playgrounds and parks, without adult supervision. Further, eliminate tariffs on world sugar so sugar made from sugarcane is no more expensive than sugar made from other crops.

The reason people are obese is because food companies pay billions each year to hide information about weight loss and healthy eating and the dangers of junk food - and the governments want to collect taxes and bribes from these businesses
