I think of them as Europeans, I guess, and maybe Mediterranean depending on their heritage. If someone says “Latin”, I assume they mean to say “Latino”, unless they’re talking about the classics language, which of course originated from that area, but I guess I don’t think much of it as it’s not a current conversational language. I’d maybe consider it more of a sub-section of linguistics, since many languages have roots in Latin. But I guess I just generally don’t consider people to be “Latin.” I consider people Latino/Latina, but not “Latin.” I usually associate it with vaguely-racist statements from older white people😂 “If you have yard work to do you can pick up some Latin guy at Home Depot in the morning”, lmfao. But yeah, I don’t think I’d even think of Italians if someone used it in a demographical context.
People who live in Italy are known as Italians. Native Italians are descendants of Latin people. Romans were Latin and spoke Latin. Italians today don't speak old Latin anymore, but they, along with France, Spain and Portugal, speak languages that evolved from Latin. With France, Spain and Portugal, that's because of Roman conquest and colonization. But the Italians weren't conquered. They were already there. Today's Italians are direct descendants of Latin people who were there for 3000 years.
It IS strange that people from Spain and Spanish speaking countries are known as Latino. But I think that's because of the shared languages of the countries I mentioned. They are known as the "romance languages'.
Romania is a latin nation as well togeder whit romanian language.
There are 5 major languages and nations that are latin

Not really, but they have a far better right to that label than the Hispanics do. Yes, Spanish IS derived from Latin, but so is French, and I don't hear Canada being referred to as "Latin America". Nor, for that matter, are the US, Belize, and Guyana referred to as "German America".
the reason is very simple... and you gave part of that reason in your opinion
there is indeed an Hispanic America... but that refers only to the countries in American speak Spanish, hence Hispanic, whoever
there are other countries in the same region who do not speak Spanish as their main language... so the entire region as a whole is referred to Latin America instead, because there are also countries who Speak French and Portuguese so...
this is not a claim for American to be Latin... it is just the recognition to the fact the main languages spoken in the region are all derived from the Latin origins
@NathanDavis "Hispanic" doesn't mean "Spanish"; it means "of Hispania", which is the whole of the Iberian peninsula- so not only would it include Portuguese (and, to a lesser extent, French), but also Basque. And that still leaves Suriname out in the cold; Dutch has nothing to do with Latin and never did.
well, you are wrong... so please let me correct you
first of all... Hispanic is a word derived from Spanish, which means Hispano
and Hispano or Hispanic, does not only refer to the concept or "Spain" the full and complete meaning and denomination is " related to Spain and the Spanish speaking countries" and that has always been
the differentiation, and it did refer to certain regions of Spain, and not the whole peninsula
I see you mention Basque, well, that is not the only language spoken in the peninsula, there is at least six others, the more famous being Catalá and by the way, the language was not called Spanish but Castillian... from Castilla, but it was only because of the crown and kingdom of Spain that people started to call the language "Spanish"
so, yes... the fact still stands... Hispanic in English and Hispano in Spanish are both the same thing "related to SPAIN AND THE Spanish SPEAKING countries in America
and that is why, it is referred to the region as Latin America instead, just so the other nations are included
another fun fact... Suriname might be officially a Dutch Speaking country in paper, but pretty much half of its population speak a creole language called Sranam or something like that
@NathanDavis "Hispanic" is derived from LATIN, not Spanish, and again, it means "of Hispania", the Roman province corresponding to the Iberian peninsula.
maybe back in the ages... that's the only world that existed back then... however it is 2022
so... yes, things have changed a bit
another fun fact... not all the people in Italy see themselves as Italians, certainly NOT ROMANS lmfao...
lots of places in there in which you go with that Italian flag and call them your "Latin brothers" and you won't come out alive
@NathanDavis So to your mind it's okay to ignore what a word actually means and misapply it by filtering it through another language to change it's meaning?
Do you have any idea what that would actually DO?
no... words have FULL meanings
and they also adapt different meanings according to the context
and that is one of the most important aspects of both Spanish and Latin as well
how the words are used in the context of all other words... a WORD, any word only has TRUE meaning when it is connected to others, never by itself
and that is about the most wonderful things about Spanish
so you should not be using the parts of the meaning of a word that are convenient... you have embrace the FULL meaning of the word entirely and also their meanings within context
and yes, to change the meaning of words is something very common... that's why England, America and Australia are very careful when they say certain words like fanny, for example
@NamerOfStars actually, this reminds me of one of my favourite words ever...
in Latin... acceptĭo, -ōnis
or, in Spanish... acepción
ITALY INVENTED LATIN
PORTUGAL, SPAIN, FRANCE, ITALY AND ROMANIA ARE THE MAIN LATIN COUNTRYS.
SAUD American PEOPLE ARE LATINOOOOOOOO
Because they speach latin language (Spanish and portugise) but don't have any conation whit the mother language LATIN or Roman Empire.
Sure doesn’t the language Latin come from Ancient Rome? I mean you do have the western and eastern Roman empire but I guess I would consider in Latin because I was the predominant language in Italy and the Roman empire for about 1000 years
Latin is a language, not a nationality or an ethnicity.
Latin is a nation as well
Why i hate the idea of “race”. But i think even tho the country spoke a language called that years ago, latin is now across the pond.
But are they white?
Considering they invented the language…
I consider them Italian
whitch mean they are latin people
@Alexandrubaschet08 Latin is a language "not a people"
I'M LATIN DUD, WTF!
@Alexandrubaschet08 okay speak in Latin... let's see how much I can still understand
Limba mea este o limba latina care se trage din limba materna Latina, inca din timpul Imperiului Roman limba de baza, latina, a suferit modificari din cauza pronuntilor si a celorlalte limbi care existasera inainte si cele care au influentato dupa caderea imperiului si pierderea anumitor provincii.
(Romanian=Latin language)
Language is something ALIVE just because the olde latin language is no more, that doesn't mean our languages are not latin. Our language are latin because WE ARE TRUE DESCENDENTS FROM ROMANS.
same for the people
@Alexandrubaschet08 knew it... lol
you just have a kink for Roman stuff...
@Alexandrubaschet08 but yes, still kind of cool that I can understand most of what that says just because I speak Spanish
I meet Spanish people who never hear my language and i told them i can understand them some time whit 0 Spanish lesons. BECAUSE WE ARE LATIN.
AND THEY SAY THE SAME
Como se zice = Cum se zice
Aiuda (Spanish) = a Ajuta (romanian)
Como esta = Cum esti
Frigo = Frig
Trista = Trist
