It depends on the vocal tone and other body language signs too, Amanda. As a psych student myself, I'd say I do see her point. Especially if it's already well known fact that she's having a tough time working in a white country. It depends a lot on context, but yes, we can all benefit from more tact.
I've a thumb rule for this : if someone is hurt by you, you don't get to decide you weren't hurtful. And you really weren't trying to be offensive, you can always clarify your intentions and apologize.
"if someone is hurt by you, you don't get to decide you weren't hurtful"
Yeah, I fundamentally disagree with this. And so do many others who are older. This is a massive generational difference. Your age group of females says this a lot. What it does is remove you from the equation, and place all blame on the other, regardless of intent or circumstances.
Being hurt does not mean someone meant to hurt you. Or that they need to feel bad or apologize. It must always be analyzed on a case-by-case basis. All feelings do not need to be "validated" as is so common a word today. They can be acknowledged, heard, but disagreed with. This is fundamental to communication.
Yes, I consider it microaggression. I've been dealing with this for a long time. I've noticed that sometimes it's out of curiosity other times it's to make me feel different.
I know I'm not white, I know I'm not Portuguese, but I don't need to be constantly asked about my nationality, my accent, my hair or my skin tone.
Whoever considers this to be the "victim mentality" they don't know what racism or discrimination is. They're never went through it.
If ur a Victim then every other accusation must be valid and you’re empowered to bring down the “oppressor” (whoever they know is holding them back from undermining our country).
To be honest I don't even know what microaggressions are. . I don't have the time or patience to analyze evert little word people say.. I think it's ridiculous
i would say that's an unfair generalization. but there sure are quite a few of these. you can be shit at any job and there's people that suck at their job in any profession. psychology is no exception to this.

Whatever.

in my day to day life, i choose not to talk to people who use the word "microaggression" unironically.
No. People ask me that all the time out of curiosity. I don't care. My immigrant mom doesn't care. Her immigrant friends don't care.
Not sure but here a cool clip about microexpressions.
https://www.youtube.com/embed/tf8Iy_XfAIAI know body language experts are often called in to assess criminal cases (and that's cool, and useful)... but this show looks sooooo cheesy!
Basically used the same schools I went too in creating the show. when I was an investigator. It’s actually spot on …we used the same techniques.
Even if those really are microaggressions, there a billion far more important psychological issues to tackle.
I don’t want to give the wrong answer, the question makes me feel inferior? I didn’t select either one.
If that kind of thing increases her cellular ageing how long would she survive in a Russian gulag? smh
Yes, I think these two examples are microaggressions.
Half and half, I think the where you are from isn't but the way the other one is phrase could be taken that way.
It would depend on the asker. Ignorance isn’t an excuse, but doesn’t necessarily mean an ignorant asker intends harm either.
If ur a Victim then every other accusation must be valid and you’re empowered to bring down the “oppressor” (whoever they know is holding them back from undermining our country).
I don’t believe in micro-aggressions. This contrivance is meant to demoralize students who are not minorities and to give them a guilt complex.
I think it all comes down to empathy and intent. Why are you asking the question and how do you think that question would make the other person feel?
They could be. Depends on the intent of the speaker.

They can be micro aggressions but sometimes they are genuine questions.
Psychologist people are generally completely full of shit, it's complete snake oil,,,

@genericname85 fair comment!
They are, but it all depends on the personal context as well.
The term “micro aggression” sounds like pure horse shit.
