The question is based on the premise that Nigerian-Americans are black, which may generally be the case. However, it somehow conflates nationality with ethnicity. For all we know, the said Nigerians in the statistic may be of a different race but naturalized, e. g. similar to how affluent Han Chinese people obtain citizenships from underdeveloped nations to further their entrepreneurial interests with their newfound rights.

For the record, the USA did institutionalize discrimination against black people. Although discrimination laws have long been repealed/outlawed, the impact is still sadly prevalent the way I see it (as a non-American). I guess this is just a reflection of the USA where dynamics somehow still involve race and color in some way, as unfortunate as that sounds, making every American equally vulnerable to racial discrimination regardless of ethnicity.

Remember that data alone is not conclusive. I'd be tempted to say that the people who fall under the demographic quoted above have reaped some sort of benefit from "affirmative action", but this would just be mere speculation without merit. Maybe it would be better if the industries where Nigerian-Americans thrive are mentioned (granted how particular industries thrive better than others and, in turn, generate wealth in the process.

Let's break this down.

Jim crow laws from the end of slavery 1865 to 1964. Was a set of laws put in place to limit the education (most black school did not have books, chairs or desks so the education given kept black people at that time barely able to read)

type of jobs black people were allowed to have. (Basically the jobs white people did not want because of hazardous conditions to lack of pay)

So put this together. From the 1770's to 1865 black people were cattle. From 1865 to 1964 black people were set up to completely fail.

So when black people for the first 200 years were forced to have 0 education or opportunities black people fell behind..

While white people were given all the opportunities needed to be successful.

Now put this together. Now that we are given an opportunity to crawl out of the whole we were put in, we are but why would anybody with common sense think black people born in America would be as successful as black people who get a fair start. From the start.

So as for anti black. America was extremely antiblack up to maybe 20yrs ago.

But those hundreds of years of anti black put black born Americans in a whole that we are starting to dig our ways out of

Eventhough 85% of black people are hard working upstanding citizens many of them because they came from family's that due to jim crow laws never got the chances other did so they work 2 or 3 jobs. So many work harder than immigrants and white people to make up for the lack of opportunities presented to them during their generation. Many of my generation still struggled but we had more of an equal footing than previous generations.

Which is why this generation has far more black college students that previously. And it will continue to rise each year. Again you think climbing out of 5 generational hole happens overnight. It doesn't it took 260 years to put us here 20 years isn't going to fix it.

They just haven't been getting the education immigrants do.

Immigrants have a better understanding of America, than American born citizens giving them more of an advantage to be successful in America.

My parents are immigrants and they learn things that people who lived here their entire life have 0 clues, do to citizenship test.

It is very obvious if you have flaws it is harder to succeed in life. If you have less advantages or opportunities it is harder to succeed in life.

There are libraries available. What if you are 7 and the teacher could careless. You parents work 2 jobs and nobody will take to the library, and your parents can't afford the internet? Most school work now is done online through Chrome books. How do you do your homework at 7 from home?
Life isn't this simple everyone has ways.
And by the time someone is self sufficient because when they were too young and had noone to rely on they are so behind it is extremely difficult to just catch up let alone succeed.
Again it isn't laziness.
I suggest you get to know or understand completely the people you are downing before you make a judgment of what life is like for them.
Get out your protective bubble and understand not everyone who failed or struggled is due to laziness. But the situation they were put in ruined theif chances

When I left my parent's I didn't get a choice of any handouts dude. My dad is the one with the most money but he is a prick and my mom is very kind but does not earn a lot. And the most important thing you need to understand about scholarship is that, for many people, if they don't cover EVERYTHING, they are useless. Because how is someone going to be be successful in school even if the full tuition is paid for, if they don't have any money to get the textbooks? And how are they going to succeed in school even if the tuition AND books are paid for, if they don't have a place to live?

Another problem seems to be the past is constantly brought to the present. I’m not denying that blacks, for the majority of American history have been treated unfairly to say the least. Slavery ended 160 years ago, and segregation around 70 years ago. There seems to be this on going living in the past. It seems like each generation enforces their views to the next. That blacks tell other blacks “watch out for the racism” but it’s pretty much non existent.

It also seems like current problems are blamed on racism. That every problem in fact is blamed on racism.

I can understand how generations of the traumatized may have passed down words of warning. Again, blacks have historically been mistreated. But that was over 70 years ago. It seems like many blacks are living in a past that doesn’t exist….. because that’s how it always was. That they keep reaffirming to each other a negative thought bias.
