British woman arrested for thinking. Right or wrong?

A British woman has been arrested for thinking and praying in silence near an abortion clinic according to catholicherald.co.uk/.../

Isabel Vaughan-Spruce was arrested, searched and held in custody after she told officers that she might have said some silent prayers close to the British Pregnancy Advisory Services Robert Clinic in Kings Norton.

Officers asked the 45-year-old from Malvern, Worcestershire, if the photographs showed her praying outside the clinic and she admitted that she might have been praying silently in her mind, but also thinking about her lunch and other trivial things.

She is now on bail and banned from praying anywhere.
"Bail conditions include a requirement that Ms Vaughan Spruce, the director of the UK March for Life and a pregnancy counsellor, desists from taking part in public prayer even beyond the limits of the exclusion zone."

You have to start at the end when you read the words 'exclusion zone'.

What is an exclusion zone and why is it there?

It turns out that abortion clinics in whereever have set up or rather it seems when you read a little more that they have been forced to set up exclusion zones where you are prohibited from interfering with or intimidating or otherwise putting off or bothering people at the clinic.

This is being pitched as thought crime but that is not the case at all, you are completely free to think about your lunch and silently pray to yourself without interference from the state what you are not allowed to do is go and troll people at an abortion clinic, which is clearly what these people have been doing previously and what led to the creation of the exlusion zones in the first place, that is why praying is specifically excluded in the list of things you are not allowed to do in the exclusion zone.

This woman has 4 counts against her and was reported to police ON SIGHT while standing there in silence, why? Well presumably because she has form and was recognised as a troll.

And this is the Christian media, biased heavy in favour of her.

What would come out if you start asking what she and her friends have been up to previously is likely to be quite interesting.

This seems rather political bullshit. It's certainly not praying that obviously caused the problem, but the way the woman tries to interfere with clinic's activities. Democracy is about freedom of opinion and expression, but doesn't one's freedom stops where someone else's starts?

I will never understand why some people want absolutely force their opinions upon other people. This goes two ways, I mean here the topic of an abortion clinic and a person trying to prevent women to undergo abortion. Let every woman decide for themselves whether or not they want this or not. No one at all is otherwise concerned, set aside an involved doctor or a voluntarily choosen confessor.

Very bizarre. What when how can praying near an abortion centre be considered intimidating as the article claims? Abortion can be potentially dangerous to the mother so there is legitimate reason to pray - for the person's well being, etc. Not to mention to many it'd be considered a form of respect to the babes that were aborted.

The explanation for why the exclusion zones HAD to be set up in the first place is not included in the article because the articles are from Christian press and are therefore biased in favour of the woman who was arrested, AGAIN.

It is entirely obvious from the information provided that there has been a sustained campaign by religious nuts at these clinics, that is why the exclusion zone exists.

Your own question is self explanatory and is exactly the point. What the fuck have these people been doing that led to the creation of an exclusion zone which had to explicitly state that you are not allowed to exist even in silence inside the exclusion zone?

The answer is obvious; that these people have been trolling the clinic over a long period of time and it doesn't matter how many times you explain to them that their behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated and that they are required to show respect for other people, they just don't get it, it's almost as if they feel they answer to a higher power and don't have to obey the rules that apply to everyone else, they are special..

So you get to the point where the exclusion zone exists, everyone knows you aren't allowed to interfer with the clinic in ANY WAY WHAT SO EVER INCLUDING SIMPLY BEING IN THE AREA WITHOUT HAVING LEGITIMATE BUSINESS THERE.

She goes right back and picks up another fucking count against her.

What options remain available other than stripping this woman of her freedom?

Obviously people have been intimidating women going to the abortion clinic. So an exclusion area has legally been set up there to prevent the harassment of women going there. That woman may have been blocking, speaking, or just glaring at women going there. She is free to do those things from outside the exclusion area, but not in it. If she had been using her brain she would not have been "thinking" in the exclusion area.

It sounds stupid, but the court's not quite as dumb as you make it sound: she's banned from *public* prayer. I suspect that the woman has done much more than just silently pray around an abortion clinic in the past. Shouting or crowding someone is not the only way to intimidate them.
