Thoughts on Scotland legalising changing gender in documents without medical diagnosis?

Scottish parliment recently voted to aprove a bill that makes it easier for people to change their genders in official documents.

- It drops the requirement for medical reports before filing for documents, including gender dysphoria diagnosis
- The period required to be officialy recognised as a new gender would be reduced from 2 years to 3 months
- The age limit is reduced from 18 to 16

No there is still a medical diagnosis and referral system in place.

The point of the law is that English law places different demands on documents that Scottish law doesn't. You still get a UK passport and UK driving licence, not a Scottish, English or Welsh passport or driving licence. This law (if Westminster doesn't block it) changes that dynamic somewhat.

If all it's doing is altering what the government considers you to be, I see no problems; laws should be gender-neutral anyway. Actually inflicting physical harm on people has consequences, and sex-change surgery warrants having mandatory psychological testing beforehand. Bureaucracy? Less important.

Eh, maybe- but if the sporting organizations are privately regulated, government declarations wouldn't matter. And I don't think that would be a hugely common thing- it WOULD happen, yes, but probably not often enough to be a major issue.

Now, assuming the UK legal system works the US one (which I think it does, at least as far as this goes), that'd probably prompt a series of lawsuits, but given how much UK law rides on gender distinctions, I don't see it holding up, unless the courts are REALLY bold.

It's insanity, that's what it is. I think there's going to be a lot of coercion from counselors and liberal parents and a lot more predation. Along with an increase I self-harm and suicide attempts. And it'll make it harder to sue.

Gender is a social construct, it has no real basis in the medical field so why should they be required?

Well to cut a long back and forth short, genetics. However, and this is important. It is not a male/female difference. It is far more complicated than that, and we dont really have words to describe what is really going on with normal discourse so I am not going to try.

Point is, its a huge oversimplification to the point where its no longer accurate or representative of the real system behind it.

But my point is that this biological system originating in genetics and evolution has more or less become completely divorced from our concept of what a "man" and "woman" is. As such, our usage of the terms is not really dependent on the actual biological truth and is limited to what we as a society accepts as a "man" or "woman" hence why it does not matter what a doctor says.
