Nerd opinion incoming, but…. other than long-term lifestyle choices like eating poorly, driving is the most dangerous thing most of us do everyday. Actually just watched a short video clip showing a car being crashed into a pole at different speeds. 35 mph was the last speed I saw where I was like “this would result in minor injury at worst.” They showed it at 50 mph, and I was like “ok, this is the first speed where it looks like your rib cage and vital organs could be crushed by the steering wheel being smashed into your torso. 80 mph, forget about it, the car was accordion’d.

I see most people driving around like shit is sweet, acting like it can’t happen. Texting, eating, making phone calls, engaged in animated conversation with their passenger, etc. I’m of the mind that when you’re driving, you should be JUST DRIVING. Pay attention at all times, not just to what you’re doing, but to what vehicles around you are doing, too. Don’t get competitive and not allow people to change lanes in front of you, or get in these “no, I’M the one the right of way!” battles. Heard a great quote: “cemeteries are filled with people who had the right of way.” Like when the light turns green, I still look both ways before taking off, just to make sure some other idiot coming the other way isn’t on their phone and unaware of the red light.

When I was like 14, I was going to the mall with my mom, and all these cars had pulled over on the highway overpass. There was a big accident scene on the highway below, and we stopped to see, too. It was towards the end of it, didn’t really look like THAT devastating of an accident, wasn’t like a crumpled up ball of steel, it just looked like a car in the fast lane hit the cement wall in the middle between the northbound and southbound lanes.

The two things I saw next, I’ll never forget. One was the ambulance pulling away, no sirens, no lights, no urgency. Driver was definitely DOA. And right after that, the fire truck hose came out, one of the firemen sprayed the ground by the accident, it went up and off the center wall, and it was blood red, like a shark attack in progress. I knew at that moment that driving was something I would never, EVER fuck around with. The stakes are too high.

Another thing I once read was that past 60 mph, a car accident victim will be assumed to have suffered spinal cord damage by medical personnel. That doesn’t mean it always happens, but you’re in danger of it even at UNDER the speed limit on most highways. Being stuck in a wheelchair, unable to kill myself, is literally my worst nightmare, so you can count on me taking it real slow.

Other thing is police. I live my life with a very deliberate goal of never having to interact with law enforcement personnel. The easiest way to find yourself in one of these interactions is by committing driving infractions. Like it’s literally part of the plan to give an innocent cause to check out people they decide are suspicious. There are a good amount of cops in the recreational hockey scene where I am, and I’ve literally heard conversations about whether or not they’ll enforce this or that, and basically it was said “if they decide they want to pull someone over, they can come up with some reason for a stop.” That is FUCKED, almost makes me not want to drive at all.

So you will find me in the right lane, cruise control set to the exact limit, always. Please miss me with your dirty looks and middle fingers…. the person going the speed limit is never, ever wrong for doing so. Everyone else’s impatience is irrelevant. I pledge to only use the left lane for passing, but if I’m passing the semi truck going 60 and I’m at 65 in the passing lane, I’m still right, because no one is supposed to be OVER 65, period. So I really don’t appreciate when I hop in the lane for literally 5 seconds to pass, and Johnny Ford F-150 is flashing his headlights at me, flying up my ass at 90 mph, like it’s MY bad that he’s speeding. Kindly GTFOH.

Driving the speed limit on the freeway in most places in California will get you killed - you will be holding up the entire flow of cars. But the "normal" speed is about 10 MPH over the limit, or about 75 MPH most places. This is fast, but most people can drive this speed relatively safely.

But over the last 10 years or so, there have increasingly been people who drive like they're playing Grand Theft Auto - weaving through traffic at 130+ MPH, crossing 4 lanes of traffic in 1 second, driving on the shoulder, etc. And unsurprisingly, they often crash, only it's a lot more serious than it is on their game console.

As I said at the top, driving too slow is nearly as dangerous as driving too fast, and probably every other day I have to deal with someone driving in a middle lane of a 4-5 lane freeway doing 55 (10 MPH under the posted limit, and 20 MPH slower than the flow of traffic), and they're causing LOTS of near-misses and sometimes actual crashes (I've seen them happen many times myself).

Mostly speed. I only go the speed limit when it’s raining, when I know cops are nearby, or when I’m stuck behind slow asses.

This depends on your situation and where you are driving, in the US in most states they got rid of the cops who enforce traffic, so it will be rare to get a speeding ticket. Though in some states, counties and municipalities they are well funded. I tend to stick to a 5 to 8 in a city. In California they don't enforce anything less than 80MPH CHP only.. Though some counties will catch you over 70.. confusing as hell but you have to know the area. In another state yes, you don't want to 5mph over any speed, and ZERO over in school zones with kids present.

It all depends on where I'm driving, how long the drive is, and who my passengers are at the time.

Any children in the car? No speeding over 5 mph.

Short drive or in town? Nope.

Long drive on the highway? Yep. Zooooom!

Longer drive on the highway? I mash the pedal to the floor.

I’m a cautious speeder. If I’m the only one on the road, I will do 5 over. Max. If I’m not the only car on the road I will go as fast as the car in the passing lane but in the middle lane 2 mph slower.
