I was sectioned before as a teenager and I was told by a friend that this might be an issue. I want to own a gun because with all these shootings, I want to be able to do something about a murderer should the need arise. I would like to be able to carry in public because as long as I practice shooting accuracy and get a safety license, I know I can trust myself to defend myself and the public should it be absolutely necessary. Does anyone here have a gun and how did they go about the legalities and courses or whatever else? Can someone with a history a long time ago of being a “danger to myself” and currently on SSRIs be allowed to own a gun? I would feel really bad if I was discriminated against and not allowed to.
It depends on the state you live in, and the type of gun being purchased.
All gun sales by dealers in the U. S. must have a background check performed on the buyer by the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).
Having a history of prescription SSRI medication doesn't prohibit a gun sale from taking place.
There are reasons for denial due to mental illness. Depression is not one of them, to my knowledge. Involuntary committal to a psychiatric institution, I do believe, is grounds for a denial.
I'm making these statements based on my past experience.
I have bipolar disorder, manifesting in me working very long hours and getting very little sleep.
I've never been denied a gun purchase.
The type of gun being purchased does make a difference.
I own only rifles and shotguns, no handguns, which I use for hunting and range shooting, to improve my skills and for the enjoyment of seeing my improvement in my shooting skills.
The purchase of rifles and shotguns is straightforward, in my home state of Missouri, anyway. You declare your intent to purchase, the dealer calls the NICS, some minutes later you pay your money and leave with your purchase.
The purchase of handguns is not something I know much about. I think that there may be a waiting period of a few days before the purchase can take place. Then the handgun can be carried only in certain ways, with additional permitting being necessary for concealed carry. Like I said, I don't know much about handguns.

Not much if you are living in America that's kinda the point. And even if you were not allowed to by whatever processing it's not exactly hard to buy one anyway. Even if you are in a state without laws to get such guns because they are right next to a state which is easy access is still there.
So just buy whatever ya want, the American way.

If you want a gun you shouldn't be able to get one.
Only those who don't want a gun should get one, as they respect the burden a gun impose.Becoming a convicted felon. Besides that any adult American is allowed to. There should be safety measures but there isn't. You can be openly schizo and no laws are stopping you
Certain prescriptions, a criminal record, any form if mental illness or disorders, stuff like that
A criminal record, specifically any violent misdemeanor, or any felonies at all. And any flags on your history that says you have been hospitalized for mental health.
Someone who is an absolute moron in the legal sense...
A criminal record would do it.
