I never understood it or agreed with it. I know it’s in the Bible but I disagree with the quote. If someone wrongs me, I will wrong them in return. I also reject and disagree with the quote (Two wrongs don’t make a right). People should always get what they deserve.
"Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you."
Evil is a corrupting infection in a way. To fight on their level will leave you only to be that evil you just fought. Even leaving you believing what you are is righteous as you corrupt everything you touch. This is where evil gets its power.
The moral high ground is fundamental important to separate us from evil growing. So it's more for your own sake then anything else.
What your talking about is more a single time traded transaction that people will can pass judgment on. With society their needs to be higher standards that will transcend who we all are as a society for years to come.

Actually the Original Bible have 'Eye for an Eye', Jesus was a good guy, maybe too good.
Its okay to want punishment when people are mean to you but God alone knows what type of punishment is appropriate, what method of punishment is appropriate, what duration is appropriate, what time period is appropriate, what intensity is appropriate, and what explanation is appropriate. God alone knows what types of atonement are necessary to avoid punishment... which is why you should avoid fighting people who do wrong and let God deal with them since God is a perfect judge who knows everything while we only know a little bit, and the things we think we know might not be true either.
