We are not sympathetic. We care only for ourselves. When a family runs out of money their homes and cars are taken and sold for cheap, where the rest of us make a profit.

It’s a zero sum game of “I win, you lose”. There’s really no equal. A “non-zero sum game” means both sides are happy. But that’s rare.

Even helping homeless comes with a risk of being had. I bought a sandwich for a guy who said he was homeless, and saw him later at a grocery store with a basket full of food.

There are just people with less shame, less pride, who can psychologically take advantage of people, openly.

Yet we all - ALL - take advantage of people. Just not openly. People die of famine “over there” so we can live how we want here.

This ain’t really a call for action. Just stop acting so fcking righteous.

When you sit in church and feel holy, fck you. When you vote for the ideologue you believe will make things great again- fck you.

This lack of self awareness is our BIGGEST problem. If we could accept the fact that we are not sympathetic, and we’re actually GREEDY that’s a good first step. And we can try help people from a better position.

I still think most of us are decent and sympathetic. At least I hope so.

Where I might disagree very strongly with you politically is that I believe wealth is a positive-sum game. I think the evidence is strongly on my side if we want to go into this further. Wealth is created, not merely distributed.

Where we might agree is that the distribution might be in need of improvement. I suspect it irks me as much as it irks you when we both encounter a right-wing type saying to a homeless man, "Get a job, loser!"

But where I agree with that right-winger is that making good choices will protect us from such poverty maybe ~90% or so of the time at least in developed nations. Most people who find themselves in such horrible conditions in those are usually those who chronically made horribly bad choices.

That still doesn't mean they deserve to be freezing in the winter on the streets, mind you, but helping most of these people might be about encouraging them to make better choices than simply giving them handouts.

As for lack of self-awareness, I would claim there are at least three levels in my case. First was the lack I had as a child oblivious to the suffering of the world. The second in my early teens was the sense of self-awareness but the absence of real means to do anything about it except to try to persuade my parents or the government to do something about it. I think most people on the left are stuck in this mindset. The third is to start personally doing things about it but realizing I can't save the entire world; I have to start prioritizing people like my wife and child, and that's the third stage that I think will at least push a lot of people more towards the right that I think much of the left is missing.

2nd we have lost a lot of our sympathies The how are homeless vets on the street? Do you have the mentally ill on the street and this is all for the leftist idea of freedom. They’re happy being on the street according to the left, we must keep them there. The people in Saudi Arabia are more sympathetic than we are as Americans.

The reason we seem numb to the suffering in the world is because we forget that compassion burnout and moral exhaustion is a thing and when you’re bombarded with images online of starving African children and suffering families in Ukraine and sick homeless animals in Topeka and the depleting forests of the Rainforest, it’s really, really easy to get tired of caring and become numb to it all. It’s not that we don’t care, it’s more that we just don’t know how to focus our compassions into one specific drive and ambition that we can pool our efforts into and learn that caring a lot about that one singular thing is not something to feel guilty about because we have limited energy and time despite how being online makes us feel otherwise.

It's not our job to drop everything and care for every needy person in the world.

1. I have a limited time alive and I plan to enjoy it.

2. I could devote all my resources and time to try to help the world and I would barely do anything on a large scale.

3. It's not my job. It's the job of the community as a whole to do a little bit each to help and also is up to our government to minimize suffering but of course we know they are corrupt as fuck.

4. I am way more concerned about corruption in government and things like free speech being taken away. Helping the homeless guy the street is going to not really matter if all the future generations are doomed to live like the Chinese and North Koreans.
