With social media you can now have kids who can legitimize their sickness with social groups in order to think that whatever they are thinking or doing as normal. Think about it... If you were sick in the head with idea's and wanted to feel like belonging certainly social media is a great way to seek this wrong way of help. Sick people on social media will always make others of their ilk like they belong. A grown gay man who wants to dress half naked and walk down the side walk everyday when school is out for the day... Certainly he has social media that will make him feel like he belongs and that he's perfectly normal.

There have been a number of studies that conclude a demonstrable negative effect of social media on the mental health of younger people.

Yes because social media gives everyone a voice no matter how mentally sick and weird they are. The problem is that social media is based on entertainment and since weird people are often more entertaining they get more attention than normal people. Especially young people that are easy to manipulate can look at those weird trends and think that´s how life is supposed to be and follow them.
That´s where most of the kinks comes from.
