Is it really that surprising to say you're from Texas?

I'm Mexican-American but I live in Texas. I drove to Quebec and people could not believe I was from TX. "OMG you're from TeXAS?" One even asked me twice as if I was lying. Even an old guy went inside my campsite to talk to me "ohhh you're from TX?"

Whenever I say I'm from Mexico nobody bats and eye but Texas? Even a German dude I met in California was all like "TeXaS!" And smiled after I told him I was from there.

Idgi. What's the deal with Texas? Honestly I have slight autism and it now makes me anxious to say I'm from TX. I don't know if they're low-key judging me, making fun of me, or thinking bad things. Maybe I should just say I'm Mexican?

i imagine perhaps foreigners are just unaware of how many mexican americans there are in america and in particular Texas. No American should ever be surprised. hell texas was mexican territory until relatively recent history. so even ignoring immigration it should be expected that even though texas became a US state, that plenty of mexicans never left

Texas is very popular, and there's also a few ideas of what Texans look or act/sound like

so, most people do not actually realize how big on state is and how much "variety of people" are out there, lol

and I guess it could go to the same for states/countries as well

in my case though... people do seem much more surprised as soon as I speak with "that perfect Spanish" out of nowhere, lol

If this happened in Quebec, they are probably surprised that you came all the way from Texas, not that you are from Texas.

To be fair, it is a long drive. Also, I expect they were impressed you left to visit Quebec. Americans are often perceived as myopic. Texans even more so. 😂
