ROME (TND) — Americans will soon be advised to eat less meat in an initiative by the United Nations to meet the constraints of the Paris Climate Accords, Bloomberg reported.

The United Nations’ Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO) is expected to announce the guidance at the COP28 summit in December. Richer nations such as the U. S. and Australia will be asked to curb their “overconsumption” of meat. Developing nations, though, will be advised to pick up the slack in meat production to meet nutritional deficiencies

The UN can pound sand about this and a whole lot of other things. The UN should not even be involved in this. It wasn't formed to tell people what to eat. It wasn't formed to do a lot of other things it does.

Maybe we should all quit eating meat. Then compensate by creating millions of acres of new farmland to grow veggies. Clear cut the forests, drain the wetlands, flood the desert.

If the UN or anyone else wants to REALLY deal with greenhouse gases or other environmental issues, they should figure out a way to seriously decrease the population. As long as these people exist, they will continue creating pollution and using resources.

Meat is highly nutritious and efficient food. Cattle, and other ruminants, eat food that is total worthless to humans. They turn worthless food into food that is extremely nutritious. It's efficient use of land, because they can live places that are very poor farmland for growing veggies. Or they eat foods that maybe humans can live on short term, but not thrive on. If people quit eating meat, they'll have to find good quality farmland to do it, not the crap land that supports cattle and animal food sources.

WTF are half the commenters babbling about?

It's not mere "meat" that is causing the problem, animals have been on earth longer than humans have. It's the production, processing, transport and everything else that goes into putting a meat product on the shelf.

But the fucked up thing is that plants will actually be WORSE than meats. As they take a lot more processing than meats to put on the shelf.

But Americans in particular are fucking parasites and wasteful as fuck when it comes to food. The UN is just putting it in nicer language.

Eating less would be better probably. I know I make myself a small chicken salad every day for lunch once I'm up for the day. Great use of the leftovers and a way to get more veggies in my diet besides protein (as I became used to for weight gain).

If I were to stop eating meat, I would starve. Mom made me eat my vegetables when I was a kid - and I was no fan. Now I am a grown-up and so my diet is mostly meat.

Besides, as far as I am concerned, global warming has been a huge disappointment. I keep hoping for a winter that feels like the month of May. Yet to no avail.

As far as I am concerned, the year should start on April 1 and end on August 31 and then zip back to April 1. I see no value in the weather and short days of the whole September through March timeframe.

Put it all together and I am afraid that I am going to have to disappoint the United Nations Organization on this one. I won't eat my vegetables and my dream is to feed the penguins from my beach chair on the sunny warm soft sands of a sunlit tropical Antarctica.

Not what the UNO had in mind, I think.

lol eating less meat is going to solve global warming? what nonsense. the leading cause for global warming is fossil fuel emissions, cars, factories etc. the notion that meat is in some way a leading issue is absurd. not to mention growing many different crops requires entire ecosystems to be destroyed. the best options to reducing global warming would be to reduce the use of cars, or alter the designs of cars to rely on sources other than fossil fuels. ie solar, wind, hydro power
