For those of you who live in America. would you like to see an end to the two party system?

In my opinion I think that America shouldn’t have a two party system, the “left” and the “right” are like unions. Say if someone from ether party were to do something terribly wrong the party would do whatever it can to cover it up so they “don’t look bad”. Those politicians should have to fend for themselves. With no political party I feel that there will be more accountability.

The political party system has also divided our country. In each party there are terrible extremist that will follow anything the party tells them to. Just take woke and maga for example. And it’s also a huge waste of American tax dollars. Big politicians will sit there and be fucking petty during political meetings instead of getting things done.

The problem is, the Constitution's Presidential/Congressional system basically *enforces* a two-party system. Whenever a 3rd party does emerge, it (1) gets co-opted by one of the two main parties (1968, 1948, 1892), or (2) fizzles out when the "Cult of Personality" around its leader ends (1992, 1924, 1912).

In fact, when a strong 3rd party does emerge, it is NOT a good sign. It is actually a sign of discontent and unhappiness among a sizeable portion of the American public. It is no accident that the last strong 3rd Party was 1968, an unhappy year of unrest. And the one election with *four* parties - 1860, had a Civil War following it.

@slatyb is correct in that it IS possible to have sustained 3rd parties in a Parliamentary System (UK and other nations with electoral systems derived from the UK, like Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, etc.). But in those systems, the Prime Minister is the leader of a Party or coalition of two or more Parties.

And think not that those systems are harmonious, all too often the 3rd Party is a *separatist* one, like the Quebecois in Canada or the SNP in the UK.

I do wish there were more parties. There are too many points of view and too many issues and too much nuance for there to just be 2 choices.

I wish the House and Senate were filled up with people from 4 or 5 different types of parties. We technically have at least 4 right now.

@Curmudgeon At any time any party can collapse and be tossed by the wayside by their supporters... The Whig Party use to be popular. It's not popular anymore... The same phenomenon can happen to the Democrat party for example and a new party an supplant them in federal elections... Citizens are free to vote for who they please. They are just brainwashed into the two party division based on socialist media psychological operations.

That can happen every single election for all I care. I have no party affiliation. One party can win one election, the other falls. Next election another party rises, and the last party falls. Every election maybe you have 10 parties lined up competing. America doesn't need cabals of aristocracy that stretch from generation to generation lording over the populous with a specific set of social issues used to bribe the electorate. America needs citizens to step up and represent the people for the issue of this election. The elected can choose to caucus with the majority or minority dependent on an alliance of ideas or they can refuse to do so. That might mean they get no committee assignments as a small minority party, but they can still vote the way their constituent wishes. That can be a major thorn in the side of all parties when they can't reach the votes needed. That's the problem, people think they can't take that sort of action and have to be on this side or that. In reality they can make a choice.

The US doesn't really have a two-party system. There are many smaller (minor) parties, but they are active only at the local (and sometimes state) level. At the federal level, there are really only two parties: Democrats and Republicans. There have been attempts at a third party at the federal level, all have failed. It would be nice if some of the smaller parties could muster enough support to get members into the House or Senate.

Rather than end the two-party system, increasing the involvement of minor parties should be emphasized.

There isn’t a better substitute at the moment. No party, nothing gets done. Too many parties, nothing gets done. One party, the wrong things get done. 2 seems to be the best balance we have.
