Do most non Asian people really think all Asian looking people are from China?

Honestly, I travelled to some countries outside of Asia and I noticed that a lot of dumb kids / uneducated kids are prone to call an Asian individual “chinese",

Thanks to American media for popularizing Asian=Chinese worldwide, most people now think that Asia=China, when it is clear that Asia is not just China.

It really seems like Chinese race has overshadowed other Asians such as Filipinos, The Vietnamese, Taiwanese, Singaporeans and Malaysians etc.

Every time I've been to Europe in the last decade or so, the overwhelming number of Asian people conglomerating over there are Chinese, therefore it shouldn't surprise you at all if that's their immediate assumption since chances are few if any of them have ever been to the far east themselves if work didn't require it.

I grew up around a lot of Asians and can pretty easily tell them apart. A Filipino looks nothing like a Korean who looks nothing like a Thai who looks nothing like a Japanese who looks nothing like a Vietnamese.

Obviously things get tricky with mixed Asian people, but I always thought the stereotype of Americans not being able to tell Asians apart was pretty exaggerated.

Most non-white people think all white people (or at least all white Americans) are English. You get used to it.

I don't know anyone who calls Asians Chinese just because they are Asian.
