Were clowns really made to entertain children?

I never understood how clowns are supposed to be child friendly when it fact they look terrifying as fuck.

I was actually scared of clowns myself when I was a kid and I obviously was not alone as I remember my friends from elimentary school felt the same way. but then again were they actually considered friendly at one point? until John Wayne Gacy came along and ruin their image? I mean its clear that most of his victims were children and he was obviously a professional clown, therefore I persume that he was using his clown image and talents to lure his victims.

I can also see where the inspiration behind the movie IT came from. last time I checked I dont think that's the only horror franchise that's about a clown (s)

Look a little deeper... By joining the local Moose Club, Gacy became aware of a "Jolly Joker" clown club... Masons are often members of the Moose Club... They run "charity hospitals" for "disadvantaged children" where clowns often go... Gacy is just one that got caught.
