Let's be real. In all of U. S. history since like the 1950's people mostly complained about non white immigrants coming in droves regardless if they came legally or not. Before it was white immigrants and non white immigrants but people accepted white immigrants they had beef with before (Eastern Europeans, etc.). The beef with non white immigrants always existed and continued all the way till now. There have always been cases from the 1950s till now of people doing mental gymastics for white immigrants and being accepting of them.

But to answer your question, I think likely they'd prefer white immigrants because most of America is white... and if you were talking about an Asian country then they'd whine less if the immigrants were Asian as opposed to white. It's not even something you have to ask about, because history already tells that tale. Historically even legal Irish, Italian, Polish, Jewish, German, Greek, Russian, and other eastern European immigrants face discrimination in the USA during large population influxes. Entire ships of people from Europe were diverted and refused entry at times. This specifically happened quite often during World Wars. There was also a red scare to find all the communist and secret Russian agents during the Cold War. Even in the 1980s there was a lot of discrimination toward eastern block countries who were escaping communism after the fall of the Berlin wall... These were legal immigrants. The illegal ones were treated even more harshly.

The Irish for example were stacked like slaves in what where termed "coffin ships" during the potato famine. Roughly 3% of them died on the journey to America. Many were excepted due to westward expansions at the time and a need for new laborers, but many ships were turned around and refused entry due to disease. This is why Ellis Island was created for health inspections and to legally process immigrants. Many legally tried to enter but were refused entry and were sent away to die. The ones who made it here were often treated as lower class and like slave labor in many places.

Nope. Brexit was partially motivated by anti-immigration sentiments. However, unlike many other nations it was not about 3rd world countries or other races but rather other Europeans immigrating to Britain that made them upset.

But they offer nothing to the homeless, fixing inflation, shoring up Social Security, or maintaining our country's infrastructure. We have people who can't afford to buy a house because of high interest rates, or buy one period in some places in the US. Where I live a 3 BR 1 3/4 bath 1500 sq ft, sells for close to $1million. Look, USA is a super power. A super power is not defined by its size, wealth or its power, a super power is defined by its influence on the rest of the world. The size, wealth and power generally follows after the influence as a product of how much control you already have over the world.

In other words, USAs position as a world power comes from your diplomatic connections with other countries, your bases around the world, your cultural dominance like McDonalds etc.. But most importantly, USA is a super power built upon military power. That is the real reason why your country has the biggest military budget. That is the real reason why you made NATO, a military alliance. That is the real reason why you have troops in the middle east and sending equipment to Ukraine.

Not sending billions of dollars to Ukraine is the same as giving up your position as a super power. I mean, I am fine with that personally. I am not American and I find America to be a bad influence on my country so if you want to collapse and remove yourself from my life forever that would be nice. BUT, if you actually care about USA then it is in your damn best interest to remain the "world police".

Saving billions by not giving them to Ukraine means you are losing much more by losing influence around the world. It does not make economic sense not to support Ukraine.

Also, and perhaps more importantly, you are USA. The richest and most powerful country on the earth. You do not have to pick and choose what you should spend money on as if there is a need to budget. We are $35 Trillion in debt, which is Out-of-control spending in Washington and is burdening each American with large and growing levels of public debt. A child born in 2023 will have a $78,089 share of publicly held federal debt. This debt is not sustainable. You remember when the USSR went broke with their spending, which ended the Cold War? That could happen to us. In fact they have to keep raising the Debt Ceiling to keep the Government running. So, the US might be on top now, but could be toppled from the top at any time.

A national debt is not like a personal debt, in that it honestly does not matter THAT much. In fact, most countries PREFER to stay in debt such as when Russia (with its massive stockpiles of wealth) took out debts intentionally just to make sure they build their credit rating in case they wanted to borrow money in the future (this happened long before the current war).

In other words, do not delude yourself in thinking you understand national debt just because you understand what debt means in your own life. A national debt is perfectly fine, even to an extreme case, as long as you can retain trust in your nation. As long as you have that trust you can always get more money and more loans and as a super power you have virtually infinite trust since the world economy is built upon your trust more or less.

And no, the Soviet Union did not collapse based on debt. The Soviet Union was broken as a nation in several places ranging from its economy to social problems and political problems which all together just culminated into a failed state. This is not in any way shape or form relevant to USA currently. The situation in USA is indeed bad, but specifically not in this way.

@AngryCarl While it is true that the UK also do not like asylum seekers and immigrants from places like the middle east, that was more of a side thing for anti-immigration in the UK. They were in a unique situation of having a lot of anti-EU sentiments and a lot of brexit arguments for example was to stop the free movement of people AKA EU citizens from crossing the UK border. People like for example Polish or whatever.

As a fun aside, they did not like to be called immigrants themselves so British people liked to use a different word to describe what they were doing when buying houses in Spain or whatever and called themselves expat, which is arguably an accurate description but was still motivated by avoiding the "dirty" word of "immigrant".

The whole "stop the boats" thing is a new thing that Tories and its ilk created to replace their previous arguments against anti-EU immigration since after Brexit that is obviously no longer really relevant.

Its also just the fact that the UK is not super exposed to immigration from outside Europe. Being geographically located as it is those immigrants would have to travel across all of Europe before reaching the UK border which obviously happens but is not a major concern unlike in other countries which borders non-EU countries.

As such the UK has always been exposed almost exclusively by EU immigrants which probably did not help the anti-immigrant sentiment.
