Do employers focus on skills and competence, or are factors such as race and appearance considered significant aspects?

Been on MANY hiring committees. Resumes get tossed for the most inane reasons - dont like the color paper or font, rival / "wrong" college from the assessor on cmte, etc.

Don't get me started on the interviews. So many people just can't interview well even if they were Socrates.

the prime considerations were ALWAYS experience, references and availability to start when we wanted.

Race (somewhat less than ever, but still a factor) and even more so appearance often at least match skills and competence for employers, with telegenic folk getting more and better positions than their less-attractive peers.(How would having pinup boy looks affect a black man's employment prospects?)

hard to say as I'm definitely white... but as a woman in IT... last few years I didn't experience many situations where my skills ere doubted only because I'm a woman...

so I think it improved a lot since I started to work in IT

I'm "disabled", a term I detest. I'm an amputee. It has no bearing on whether I can do my job or any job I apply for unless I would be needed to run the hundred in ten seconds, but I couldn't do that before I lost my leg.

If I suspect I'm offered a job based on my disability I'd probably decline it. I want my skill and abilities to speak for themselves.
