If you combine the military budgets of all these countries, China still has a higher military budget than the rest of the countrys.

China is very racist country and concerned about one thing... themselves.

China has 1. x billion people, usa 400M. So relatively speaking is less. Still... please look in the mirror with a small photo of Nixon and Kissinger... we made China great again! I talked to the 80yr olds that went to china and built their industrial complexes they use to make the goods we consume. It was all part of a deal to avoid conflict and war with China while USA maintains it's wealth.

But the tides have shifted as stupid americans... uh um... Americans bought useless junk at super low prices and shipped their wealth to Asia. When you travel Asia... you will see what I mean.

What is China to do now that it has much wealth and power? They have to build strong navy to take command of their local... otherwise, they bow to west... and they don't want that. China smart smart!

Don't blame china for USA being nice and stupid.

We should be aware, and determine what we do about it. China does not want war... I don't think.

But China may want control of things and business.. taht is not good for us. That means our standard of living declines or we lose control.

Our control of world is what makes uslive the filthy rich lives we have. We could lose that. Are you ok with that?

In fact, the USA is still the richest country in the world in terms of nominal GDP. The USA has gone from being an industrial economy to a high-tech and service economy. Basically, it has become more profitable to make the software etc. that run your phones etc. than to make the phone itself.

But having abandoned industry to such an extent has a dramatic consequence: China's industrial capacity is superior to anyone else's, and in the event of war China will have a considerable advantage. Add to this the fact that China has greater purchasing power than the USA, and you understand that China is a veritable colossus, and that the USA would do better to devote its resources to indo-pacific.

I would add the rider that China does not want war till it is certain to win. But it is a whole new game once it is certain to win.

Currently China is an export driven economy so that is a hurdle for it. Difficult to make other countries buy your shit in ever increasing quantities even though you can defeat them in open battle.

The role of the naval power may be suffering from a sea change if you don't mind a pun. Much harder to project power now with hypersonic missiles.

Interesting with AI and robots as that might decouple population size from wealth. Conceptually you don't need a lot of cheap workers with cheap robots and AI to drive them.

Concerned and alarmed I would say and this is being reflected in attitudes to China. 87% of Australians have an unfavorable view of China and in our region only Indonesia and Singapore have favorable views.

That is despite quite favorable treatment in the media. What is happening with respect to the Philippines can be said to be an invasion of internationally recognized borders but the media prefers to describe as a border dispute.

On the positive it seems unlikely China will manage to maintain these advances over 10 to 20 years but that may cause a go now or never go attitude. Just as Germany had to Russia in WWI and WWII.

Who’s we? The US spends an absurd amount per capita on the military. We don’t have to worry about crap. The Chinese people and their neighbors are the ones who should be worried. That force can be used to invade your neighbors or oppress your own people. China is doing it because of what’s to come in the next decade.

I don’t believe those numbers adequately reflect each countries respective military strength. China outnumbers Americans 8:1 or something, which tells me their military sucks when their budget is smaller than the US’s.

Why do you think they need to keep spending more? Their new equipment isn't anywhere near the US standards, and their old equipment is plentiful trash, while the US old equipment is still some of the best in the world (extensive use in Israel and Ukraine).

I don’t disagree. However, it’s far from peaches and cream over there. Their air quality has sucked for years. It gets particularly bad in the winter when they fire up all their coal plants and vent untreated exhaust. Those bull shit pictures we see of “prosperous” China are taken in the summertime. To be fair, their air quality is improving. They have to boil their water because they pull from rivers, there isn’t enough ground water for that many people. They have half an acre per capita of arable farmland. It takes about one to sustainable feed a person.

So, while it is true we traded prosperity for cleaner air and water, they still have major problems coming down the pipe, mainly with food. That’s part of the reason why Russia is fortifying its southern border. And, as I mentioned, that military force China is mustering can be used against its own people, which I bet is what is going to happen. I’ve spoken to a few Chinese people who say it’s crazy how they can’t challenge authorities because they can’t own a gun. The recent Great Firewall is likely a taste of what is to come.
