Hmmm... what's that word the MAGA-types and Trump use... let me see... I think it starts with a W... Oh! Witch Hunt!
Yeah, Hunter does have some guilt, absolutely, but there was definitely political interference in the judicial process which is supposed to be apolitical. So, Biden responded politically. He explained it in his statement of pardon. I boldfaced the critical statement.
https://www.nytimes.com/2024/12/01/us/politics/biden-pardon-hunter-statement.html
==========
President Biden issued the following statement on Sunday night.Today, I signed a pardon for my son Hunter.
From the day I took office, I said I would not interfere with the Justice Department’s decision-making, and I kept my word even as I have watched my son being selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted.
Without aggravating factors like use in a crime, multiple purchases, or buying a weapon as a straw purchaser, people are almost never brought to trial on felony charges solely for how they filled out a gun form. Those who were late paying their taxes because of serious addictions, but paid them back subsequently with interest and penalties, are typically given noncriminal resolutions.
It is clear that Hunter was treated differently. The charges in his cases came about only after several of my political opponents in Congress instigated them to attack me and oppose my election.
Then, a carefully negotiated plea deal, agreed to by the Department of Justice, unraveled in the courtroom — with a number of my political opponents in Congress taking credit for bringing political pressure on the process. Had the plea deal held, it would have been a fair, reasonable resolution of Hunter’s cases.
No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach any other conclusion than Hunter was singled out only because he is my son — and that is wrong.
There has been an effort to break Hunter — who has been five and a half years sober, even in the face of unrelenting attacks and selective prosecution. In trying to break Hunter, they’ve tried to break me — and there’s no reason to believe it will stop here.
Enough is enough. For my entire career I have followed a simple principle: just tell the American people the truth. They’ll be fair-minded.
Here’s the truth: I believe in the justice system, but as I have wrestled with this, I also believe raw politics has infected this process and it led to a miscarriage of justice — and once I made this decision this weekend, there was no sense in delaying it further. I hope Americans will understand why a father and a President would come to this decision.
Executive Grant of ClemencyJoseph R. Biden, Jr.
President of the United States of America
To All to Whom These Presents Shall Come, Greeting:
Be It Known, That This Day, I, Joseph R. Biden, Jr., President of the United States, Pursuant to My Powers Under Article II, Section 2, Clause 1, of the Constitution, Have Granted Unto
ROBERT HUNTER BIDEN
A Full and Unconditional Pardon
For those offenses against the United States which he has committed or may have committed or taken part in during the period from January 1, 2014 through December 1, 2024, including but not limited to all offenses charged or prosecuted (including any that have resulted in convictions) by Special Counsel David C. Weiss in Docket No. 1:23-cr-00061-MN in the United States District Court for the District of Delaware and Docket No. 2:23-CR-00599-MCS-1 in the United States District Court for the Central District of California.
IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF I have hereunto signed my name and caused the Pardon to be recorded with the Department of Justice.
Done at the City of Washington this 1st day of December in the year of our Lord Two Thousand and Twenty-four and of the Independence of the United States the Two Hundred and Forty-ninth.

1 ySo, I would’ve actually accepted it if it wasn’t portrayed by the President of The United States of America that he wouldn’t interfere with the guilty verdict. Though apparently he reached the decision after seeing his son for Thanksgiving… I would’ve accepted it also if he made it about how mandatory minimum sentences negatively impact lives and he’ll push an executive order to fix that corrupt piece of our justice system that police, prosecutors, judges exploit to put sons, brothers, fathers, and those struggling into prison then add years on top of what would be a light offense… President Biden’s legacy isn’t affected by this though since President Trump handed out pardons to Mike Flynn, Steve Bannon, and Roger Stone which all had roles in the January 6th riot even President Trump criticized Biden’s pardon saying that J6 Rioters better be in that pardon list….
I hate President Biden for allowing a guilty man to be set free, off the hook, done and done just like I hate President Trump for allowing criminals (including himself) from being held accountable to the Laws of America. This isn’t Blue V. Red, this is Justice System & Constitution & Rule of Law above all else.

*Just in case people forget: Biden stole 15 classified documents and Trump stole 315 only returning 15 and the remaining 300 were from the legally obtained search warrant then on another visit to make sure he wasn’t hiding them from the first visit… YEAH 300 were found on two trips because he tried to hide them while Biden actually cooperated while caught (still hold them accountable)

1 yI don't like it. I think we need to have laws and he lied that he wouldn't intervene. They were tough on Hunter but he did break the law. I voted for Biden and I voted for Harris but we have to hold our politicians and the rich and powerful accountable. Would Trump do the same for his son. Of course but that's not the point. This is a good example for maga to see that just because you vote for a person doesn't mean you have to blindly follow and say the person you vote for is perfect. We need to be critical of the people we vote for too.
I can empathize and imagine if I was a father I'd want to help my son, but he lied, and it's just another example of how politicians and the rich are above the law. Trump is a convicted felon and he's not going to be sentenced. Hunter is a convicted felon and he isn't getting sentenced. We need to demand more of our politicians and laws need to be upheld.

You mean how Trump is a convicted felon and he is also escaping getting sentenced by becoming President? Lets face it, the era where the judicial branch is a respected and trusted institution is gone. It is now just a tool for those in power and Biden can obviously not trust the next administration.
Times change, and so too do your obligations. Biden is an establishment Democrat. He has always believed in America and its institutions. When he promised not to pardon his son he did it because he held out hope that the law would be followed as intended. The fact that he has gone back on his words means that the person who probably wanted to believe in America the most has finally lost faith. - 1 y
@Syntosi I mean all people should be held accountable when a court of law finds them guilty. I really don't want to turn this into a what about Trump thing because my point is it all matters equally. I can't say crap if I only believe rules apply for the party I don't affiliate myself with. That would be hypocritical.
- 1 y
But this IS because of Trump. Biden would have been perfectly fine to let the law run its course, including the actual conviction of his son, if he believed that was a fair and just process. In fact, he really really damn tried to pretend it was but it just isn't. The justice system in USA is broken and is no longer a fair and just system. It can not do its function and it can't be trusted. It needs to be completely reformed quite frankly.
1.2K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. I think that is Biden losing trust in the integrity of the legal system because he fears that the Republicans will use it for political means against his kid. If you know anything about Biden, the fact that he lost trust in one of the fundamental institutions of America says a lot about the state of the country.
00 Reply776 opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. I would have to say that his son got very lucky that his father was still in the position to do what he did if you had a kid you would have done the same thing I would have done the same thing and 9998% of everybody else would have done the same thing it's not right but it's your kid about all I can say about it
00 Reply1.7K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. If the Dems have no problem with that then they need to STFU about literally anything Trump does over the next term. Including anyone he pardons over January 6th and himself.
Joe just demonstrated that he has no respect for the Rule of Law and by not objecting the Democrats have said the same.03 Reply- 1 y
Seems democrats are also divided on it. Seems less of a Dem-Rep issue and more just a sitting president on his way out
- 1 y
Can't speak for them, but I hardly consider it newsworthy. Issuing pardons, even questionable ones, right before their term is up is essentially a norm for presidents. Isn't anything new
1.3K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. It really was not unexpected, good bad or different he is his kid.
Hunter will probably self implode and either end up back in jail, or worse.
Many presidents have done similar things over the years both parties are equally guilty.
Most consider it an abuse of power, but it happens.

1 yJust a continuation of the greatest lies told in the history of this country. Four years of lies. Four years of obfuscation. with the mainstream media. WHAT you were expecting honest reporting by the mainstream media And Biden saying multiple times I will not pardon my son. But we all knew that was a load of bullshit from the administration that lied from the first second of his administration.
00 Reply Good question well I knew Joe Biden was going to do that at some point I just didn't think this early. I told Joe would let his son do a little bit more time. But guys if you think about it you knew he was going to eventually. Not sure but I would imagine he could have still done it either when he's not president but I'm guessing on that one 🕐 🕜

1 yI mean... it's not great, but it shouldn't surprise anyone. Biden is just looking after his people, which is the exact same thing he (and almost every other politician) has done his entire career.
00 Reply 1.5K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Just more proof that in the end Joe only cares about himself and his own agendas. I don't want Trump but gotta say I'm glad Biden is on his way out.
00 Reply929 opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. The entire idea of pardoning anyone is a ludicrous concept and something that should change , utterly ridiculous.
00 Reply10.7K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Not surprising. Wait until Trump frees every Jan6 political prisoner. He should give each of them 5 million as reparations. My tax dollars well spent.

1 yI'm not too fond of Joe Biden nor his son. It's wrong that that his father pardoned him. Personally I think he should serve the time with the crime. Just shows you with people and political places can do crimes without being punished.

1 yThat's some bullshit he shouldn't be allowed to do that. This country is in a sad state Democrats and Republicans have to go it's time to fire all the politicians and get some new blood in politics
00 Reply 3.4K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. By giving his son a blanket pardon for anything done over 10 years, he actually pardoned himself.
00 Reply1.6K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. I figured he would even tho he said he would not pardon Hunter. I thought it would be in January, not December.

The media also constantly accuses trump of being a rapist, yet completely ignoring the countless times Biden is clearly on video seen being weird with little kids and infants.
