Is this looting or capitalism?

Supply and demand, no one was crying about that after Katrina, rather if I'm remembering right the rallying cry was how dumb the people who didn't get out was, how the city will be underwater eventually anyway, why waste the billions rebuilding.
They're probably going to go through as long of a depopulation and clean-up as we did down here. It was only like 2 or three years ago we got back up to pre-Katrina population, though we are losing people now.
California is losing people more quickly, and when the rents go up, they're going to stay up. I had a place that was 300/month in 2003, in 2006 it was over 1000.
The rent situation, costs, and all are going to get more and more out of hand. The clean-up crews are going to require housing too, and will be getting paid beaux coup money. Some of their companies will buy out or lease property for all their employees. Your tax dollars are going to pay for that.
It isn't simple enough to call it capitalism, it's hyper capitalism that we subsidize with our taxes to grow exponentially faster.
price gouging is an unfortunate consequence of free enterprise.
Yes, it is not all that different from rent control, which in some places and in some situations works very well. There is no reason not to do this and many reasons to do it. The result is filled housing with lower economic stress on the occupants. Without this, you have to depend on the "goodwill" of landlords which if often absent.
Unregulated Capitalism is the precursor to violent revolution. Nobody wants that. You cannot always do or take everything you want, especially if it harms others.

The california exodus will increase. Property taxes will stay the same or rise, big corporation will buy huge blocks of burned out propert to build homes that no ordinary working or middle class people can afford to live in, smart homes and neighbourhoods. You get what you votd for i guess.
It's not a lie, the statisticsare freely available. California has a strong economy but so too has India and China yet the ordinary people live in poverty. A good economy does not equal high living standards, another way the Democrats have failed in California.
Also while California and LA burn Democrat politicians on California met to discuss fighting Trump's government and set aside $25 million.
Remarkable how little you understand the difference between a rich economy and the how the plebs live.
Also in the 2020 redistricting cycle based on the 2020 census, California lost a seat in the House of Representatives for the first time in its history, going from 53 to 52 seats. In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, the continued negative growth of the state saw predictions of up to 4-5 seat losses for California in the House of Representatives after the 2030 census, which would shrink its delegation from 52 to 47 seats. This would be the largest decline recorded by any state in one cycle.
According to data from the Internal Revenue Service, migration of the taxpayers out of California resulted in California being the biggest income loser ($24 billion) in 2022
They tried it after covid and lost in courts. My sister nearly lost her apartment. They won their case against the insane hikes then. They almost lost it to wildfires this past week too. Then they would have faced this madness too.

Classic demand and supply.
I think you are looking for the word usury rather than looting. Usury is to do with extortionate interest rates but I think can be used as extortionate which again is better than looting which means stealing.
Depends on how you use percentages - I think what you are saying is if rent was 100$ it is now 224$. That would seem to be usurious to me.
Rent controls aren't that uncommon but they have their drawbacks. Landlords might increase whilst they still can. So it could fuel the fire. Certainly housing stocks will take sometime to build back up and cost of building will increase very significantly. Rent controls could potentially dissuade rebuilding.
I don't think there is necessarily a simple solution to the consequent housing problems of the fires. Folk who have lost their houses need accommodation and I guess insurance will pay reasonable costs which will push up prices immediately.
i guess they don't understand that when someone rents it's usually because they can't afford to buy. that's not everyone's situation, but that's really what made it affordable to live in the old days. who the fuck is going to rent there now? no one unless you turn it into a really nice place. but i expect most won't spare the expense to reap the reward. after all, it's 100% paid for
nah. but americans are getting too smart for their own good. they want to keep us stupid. they reward it even.
listen, child. if you're not conning someone then how are you making your money?
uh huh, what is that?
that's my point. marketing is a very evil occupation.
i suppose. i believe in fairness and justice. i won't be a part of it if i know it is impossible to achieve.
Capitalism.
I love the system of Capitalism. What I don’t like is how humans exploit their fellow citizens in order to enrich themselves, which they will choose times of crisis & depression to flourish their greedy agenda further.
A well regulated Capitalist System allows for humans to succeed and enrich themselves though prevents them from mismanagement, carrying out blatant crimes / abuses, and inhumane treatment of its employees / citizens. These landlords have no right to exceed the rent cost by 124% after such a disaster that left many without a home, with a struggling family, or losing a job / business…. It is crucial that we don’t allow this behavior.
I love a Capitalist System, though it isn’t UnAmerican to want regulations that keep certain humans from exploiting situations for monetary gains. It is reasonable.
@oddbeme I’m realistic, we can’t magically replace the Capitalist System overnight. All we can do is advocate for regulations and keep the case why it is necessary to regulate the system which can embolden people to speak out for the same cause & uplift their fellow people. Capitalism sucks, though it is the only system we got that works…. Sadly only works for the rich getting richer as we working class men get squeezed & pushed around and exploited…. There is a reason why the poor can’t climb themselves out of debt as easily as one falls into it without a cushion of a huge bank account full of dough.
that's the most American thing ever... that's what it is
if you defraud for millions... months in prison
if you loot for hundreds or thousands... decades in prison
as long as they're waiting until the agreed upon lease has been met before they raise rates then that is their legal choice. Doing it before a lease is up, most likely illegal but who tf knows in commiefornia.
Nah, looting is still what those little shits are doing when they walk into a store and take whatever they want without paying for it. It's literal theft, while raising rent costs isn't stealing anything from anyone.
There's demand for you to reply to every post someone makes on your questions, but due to the limited supply of your time, energy, and patience, you only reply to the ones who give you the most "satisfaction" in return. Are you therefore looting from everyone who you choose not to reply to? Aren't they also entitled to a reply from you no matter how overwhelmed you are with demand for your replies? 😁
Neither. They have contracts, so can't raise those rents without a new contract.
The demand for housing will be red hot (pun intended), but they cannot magically make a new room appear. So I suspect it's to gouge the subletters, more than anything else.
California is one of those wonderful blue states you keep telling everyone are the best in the nation. Why aren't these people all in new homes already? The Amish can build 12 homes in 3 days in Asheville. And they're whacko antivaxxers. This is you lefties' time to shine.
My house is about 2400 SF. I do wish the yard was a little flatter, I’d love a garden. And it’s doubled in price since I bought it 15 years ago. Thanks for asking.
it is capitalism but no one is obligated to live in an apartment
if enough people go homeless or build their own homes, landlords would eventually go broke or they have to reduce the rent
people aren't helpless against capitalism
If you hafta ask the question...
Sadly yes.
Burn homes or apartments? This or more supply and demand!
Huge demand low supply
That is illegl looting. There is a law against that shit.
Capitalism and Looting are 2 sides of the same coin.
Yes we have vulture capitalist in power now, Trump is only a puppet of the vultures.
supply and demand laws mostly unfair
What's the difference
That is supply & demand.
It's a dick move.
How so?
@seeyounexttuesday you know, when I think about it, I guess I don't have a good answer, lol. It was kind of a "that's fucked up" reaction. It's not the kind thing to do, however no one owes it to anyone to provide them a place to live. I guess I am capable of an emotional response. Ewww.
Sure, that’s normal. But you have the ability to step back and think things through. Unlike lefties who continue to react to the world like toddlers.
It’s supply and demand.
It’s illegal is what it is lol
L-O--O-T--I-N-G !!!
It's both.
