1 yNo, because sports aren’t on the principle of ‘fairness’. Michael Jordan is better than most on his team back in day, same with LeBron James, same with Tom Brady, Ruth, etc.(all sports athletes in general). All of them are different heights, different weights, muscle builds, thoughts running through their minds, etc.
If we set a height limit, where does it end? It is a slippery slope. It is just stupid, how about we base it on SKILL which was always the name of the game right? Skill.

Asker1 yAre against the gender divide in sports?
Asker1 yAre you*
- 1 y
Am I against the gender divide? Each league is privately owned and can do whatever they want with it under ‘free market’. If they want women v. men then sure, go nuts. I had co education in gym class, we had separate gym locker rooms though we played sports with the opposite gender and everyone got along great also some boys were better than girls and some girls were better than boys which is okay.
Asker1 ySo I guess in most professional sports, why are short people generally less skilled? Like in the NBA, there's currently no player under 5'9.
- 1 y
Muggsy Bogues won a Hell of a lot of games under 76ers, Raptors, Hornets, and Wizards something like 60-70 games won. So I think it is a team effort, not just on the individual.
Asker1 ySure so then on average, would the average height of an NBA player be closer to the average height of males?
The average height of the NBA is well over the average height of males, since height apparently doesn't matter, what accounts for this disproportionate difference?
Asker1 yMuggsy seemed like an exception, since he's retired there hasn't been a player short of him, even 5'8 in the league is an anomaly, I guess what about basketball and most major sports dissuades average height men and shorter from wanting to invest the effort into it?
- 1 y
Muggsy is 5 ‘3 just so we are clear.
Asker1 yRight, since his career has there been a steady flow of 5'3 players in the league?
Asker1 ySo we're clear I'm asking why the standard deviation curve of height of males isn't the standard deviation curve of the height of men in the NBA?
- 1 y
I stand by the statement that sports aren’t based on fairness, they are based on skill. Anyone with said skills deserve to prove themselves as a capable athlete. Fairness would be to have more 5 ‘3 players though again not about fairness, about skill it is about skill. Muggsy has skills.
Might I add that the reason why there aren’t as many short guys playing the big leagues is due to the stereotype that only tall people can be athletes…. “James Madison was the shortest President, why weren’t there also short Presidents? Therefore you can’t be President unless you are this tall to ride” is your argument, null and void to me.

1 yNo being short isn’t a choice someone has if someone can prove themselves they can be a asset to the team. Many basketball teams have someone under 6 foot commonly.

Asker1 yIs there a reason short men choose not to play basketball professionally? I see currently there's next to no players under 5'10
- 1 y
Some are under 6 foot tall… Many are the gaurd
Asker1 yRight but I'm asking why short people don't seem to care to play or practice. Like the population of NBA players is mostly over 6ft. Most males are under 6ft.
My question is why do people under 6ft choose not to follow this career path?
Asker1 yYou mentioned some are under 6ft, thats cool, but the average height globally of men is 5'8-5'9 which there are nearly none of them are in the NBA.
You seem more knowledgeable, so I'm asking why this is.- 1 y
You’re correct asker but normally most teams have a shorter player and oddly enough they a lot of times become the ‘star’ player if you will.
- 1 y
I think if someone’s passionate enough about the sport and they really set their heart as well as their mind on it they can do it.
Maybe they have to work harder but at the same time. Can’t control your height if someone proves themselves they prove themselves
Asker1 yLet me try rephrasing, the question I'm asking is since success is a function of how much effort they put in for the NBA, why do shorter people not want to be a part of the NBA?
You mention that there are players less than 6ft, which is the vast minority, but of those players they're still taller than the average man. But it seems that there's a single digit amount of male humans under 5'10 that want to be in the NBA, which doesn't sound correct considering how popular it is globally.
From a statistics perspective, when it comes to basketball, it sounds like shorter people are simply lazy or have 0 desire to be in the NBA which is represented by the fact that average height in the NBA is in the top 1% of hieght amongst the human race. why is this?
Asker1 yAlso this means that scouts and coaches do not take physicality into account when deciding which players to invest time and money into, correct? They purely base their roster and draft management on results only?
- 1 y
I never said they were a majority but plenty of teams do have a shorter player under 6 foot.
Even if they are slightly taller then average most of the time not always
- 1 y
I think results at the end of the day is what someone’s looking for. If someone’s tall but sucks versed short but good.
Now taller people have a advantage yes but shorter people can and do prove themselves
Asker1 yI think you're not reading my question correctly. I know that the majority of the NBA is over 6'0.
You said that there are players who are under 6'0 and they tend to be highly skilled. Cool
My question is, why is the average height in NBA disproportionately taller than the average height of human males?
A slight advantage due to height shouldn't result in 99.9% of the league have a height above the average height of human males, so there must be a reason for why men under 5'9 chose not to simply put in the time and effort into getting into the NBA. I'm asking for that reason.
And in regards to the scouting. Can you say for 100% certainty that height is never considered when scouts, managers and coaches analyze players and their potential?- 1 y
You asked if short men should be banned and I said no they shouldn’t. The reason is maybe they just enjoy as well as are passionate about the sport. As long as they can play let them play.
Asker1 yIn the follow up discussion, since you dispelled the myth that height matters in sports, I'm asking you why the average NBA league height is disproportionately taller than the average height of men.
Why do 5'9 and below people have no passion for basketball while it seems many many many people 6'0 and above do?
Asker1 yI'm not arguing against you, I'm trying to understand why the standard deviation of the NBA population doesn't mirror the standard deviation of the human male population since effort is the only factor that matters.
- 1 y
Irs not that they have no passion some do, some don’t, others just prefer watching. Some people try and it’s not for them as well.
Yes height does play a role and it gives people a certain advantage. So sometimes shorter players are just simply weeded out. But not always.
Asker1 yWhat percent of the league is under 6ft?
You're talking about this as if 60% of the league is over 6ft while 40% is under 6ft. In the NBA a player under 5'9 is EXTREMELY rare. Are you saying this simply chalked up to 5'9 people simply prefer watching. Or didn't care to go pro?- 1 y
I never played basketball just watched. I’m around 5’11 but what I’m saying is that the rare ones worked hard and are passionate.
Others really probably didn’t care to go pro who knows. Maybe some people tried but got beat out as well. But at the end of the day there are those who make it
Asker1 yI am not saying there are no players who are ever under 5'9. I'm asking you why they are not common even though the average height of men is 5'9.
The most common height for men on the globe is 5'7 and half. Less than 1% of men are 6'7. Yet the average height, the AVERAGE, is 6'7. A whole foot taller than most common height on Earth.
There are BILLIONS of men between 5'7 to 5'9 and millions (a hundred millions times less than 1 billion) of men that are 6'7+ yet 50% of the league is OVER 6'7, while there's 1 single current player that is 5'8.
I don't know if you ever taken a statistics course, but you making it seem as just a big whole coincidence where on an individual basis they all just decided they didn't wanna go pro except for 1 guy is pretty insane.
Literally every source I see says that there's clear infrastructure and programs to invest more into tall players, average to short height players are often discounted unless for EXTREMELY rare occurrences.
Is your conclusion that if a 5'7 guy just simply put in a little more practice time than a 7'0 guy, he'd just as good a chance at making it into the NBA?
- 1 y
Like I said height does give a certain advantage…. Some players who are shorter mayhe have to work 10 times harder then everyone else but they make it.
Asker1 yOkay sure, but you denied that the scouting apparatus takes height and physicality into account when drafting, signing, trading, developing players. You said it's based purely on results.
A 5'9 player who plays well at a community college team will not get the same recognition as a 6'7 person putting up slightly worse numbers but at a school in the NCAA. Can you be more specific in your conclusion that only the stat sheet is used?
Also you say a CERTAIN advantage correlating not a 10x extra effort for people under the league average. What are you using to get these numbers? What positions is this for etc.
But again I think you're ignoring the scale and the advantages height gives to nonchalantly wave off the notion short people are disadvantaged by the way the sport is organized.- 1 y
Like I said before I think if someone’s heart and mind is set on something they can do it. I think it just doeneds on the team but coaches want the best players because they want to win.
Asker1 yThat's not the question I'm asking, I'm asking about the conditions that are leading to this disparity
Asker1 yAre you saying that coaches and scouts are blind to physicality and ONLY make choices based on metrics of gameplay? I'm asking specific questions.
- 1 y
I’m not saying that I said yes taller people have some advantages. But shorter peoppe donsometimes make the teamm
Asker1 yI'm not denying that, I'm asking you what accounts to the exaggerated disparity between the average height of males and average height of NBA players?

Asker1 yThe best and strongest women wrestler would lose to the shortest and weakest male wrestler?
They have literal weight classes in sports like boxing and MMA. if there such little risk why have weight classes?
Opinion Owner1 yAlmost always, yes, that will be the outcome.
MMA does not have height classes; it
Opinion Owner1 yDon't know why gag cut my message in half...
Asker1 yTo be clear you're saying a 15 yr old boy will beat the top women boxers because he's male?
Opinion Owner1 yA trained woman (adult female) can probably beat most untrained men (adult male) who has never worked out/trained a day in his life.
Now, an adult man who works out and knows what he's doing vs the best female wrestler - the man will almost always win.
by the way. Why are you talking about women vs men when your question was about short men competing in men's sports? And why are you bringing up weight classes when a short guy can weigh the same as a tall guy?
Opinion Owner1 yWhat exactly are you trying to argue because you're all over the place.
Asker1 yYou said that the best woman will lose to the worst male and that doesn't seem correct. A WNBA team will smoke a males pick up basketball team.
Opinion Owner1 yI said that the best woman would will almost always lose to the worst male wrestler. That part is correct. I was under the impression that we were talking about adults, but honestly, yeah I do think most 15 year boys could beat the best female wrestler, at the very least give her a run for her money.
Again I'm gonna ask why are we talking about this to begin with. And where were you trying to go with mma having weight classes?
Asker1 yI don't think you have any credibility if you think an average 15 year old will give the leading women's wrestlers a run for their money. The idea that gender and not actual athleticism is the most important difference in terms of performance is pretty insane.
If you join the WNBA right now will you be the MVP and the best player to ever play in the league?
Opinion Owner1 yGenerally, a 15-year-old boy is likely to be physically stronger than the average woman. Now add that the stronger boy who is training and putting in the work everyday. It just seems obvious to me who would win.
When did I make this claim? I haven't played basketball since I was 14. I'm sure I wouldn't stand a chance a against the best female basketball player.
Go back and read my earlier reply, I never argued that they're aren't women who couldn't beat a lot of men at a lot of different things. But a skilled man? Nope.
Asker1 yNo you clearly said the worst male is better than the best female at everything
Opinion Owner1 yWe were specifically talking about wrestling and "worst male wrestler" implies you're talking about a male who is a wrestler, not just any male who has never wrestled a day in his life.
If I didn't word that reply carefully enough, I have already cleared up what I meant and your choosing to ignore this because you don't have any real argument to argue.
Asker1 yWill the worst NBA player be the best Player the WNBA has ever seen?
Asker1 yI guess why not just ban all sport leagues that aren't the best of the best?
Opinion Owner1 ySports is a very healthy way to bond, in both playing and watching, and it definitely gives working class people something to get excited about.
Women's sports are great for what they are (watered down versions of men's sports) Let's leave women alone and let them compete against other women.
Asker1 yWould you be for eliminating intermural co-ed leagues? Those are also for bonding but men being in them present a danger to the women who join. Also for gym classes in school, should those be split by gender as well?
Opinion Owner1 yYea, I don't care for co ed sports. Gendered sports exist for a reason and it's not to exclude women. Quite the opposite.
This is becoming boring. Have a good night
