Now, it is tariffs (which are a tax on a nation’s imports or exports) being put on an import company which raises prices for everyday consumers.

Federal Govt imposes tariffs on Import company -> Import company retaliates and levies taxes on corporations / businesses utilizing the company to import their goods and services into the country -> Corporations and businesses retaliate with inflation onto the consumers who buy their products.

And yet inflation is holding steady. Economics dictates that id the price of something is too high people will not buy it. WalMart announced that it would pass the tariffs on to the consumer and include on the price tag how much tariff is being tacked on. Target announced that they would not be charging more. Now Wal Mart apparently has changed it;s policy to be more like it's competitor.

The reason for tariffs is not to generate revenue. Tariffs are designed to disincentivize the buying of foreign goods. If the tariffs work, and US consumers stop buying goods with tariffs on them, the tariff revenue (consumption tax) goes to zero. And China or whatever foreign country was supplying that product just sells it somewhere else. The USA is left with no product and no revenue / consumption tax. But early on in the use of a tariff, consumers in the country imposing the tariff find their wallets a little lighter.

They won't have a choice. If the tariffs work and US consumers refuse to pay a consumption tax, tariffs go to zero. It's not designed to be a long term revenue stream. Tariffs are self eliminating relatively quickly.

It's very likely that the tariffs will be overturned in the courts. That is why countries aren't seriously negotiating for trade deals. Companies are absorbing the tariffs for new if they can because when it gets overturned, they will get all the tariffs they paid back.
