Yes and no. You can be truly yourself, but if it does not align with societal norms, you'll be outcasted. If you want society to accept you, you have to do things which align with the views of the majority.

For the most part, I'd say I'm always myself and pretty consistent with who I am. But I also act differently based on the crowd. I'm usually the most transparent with my partners. I'm very close to completely myself with friends. And with family, I'd say I'm probably not as comfortable being myself around them. Interesting that sometimes you feel the least comfortable to be yourself with your family because you feel they understand you the least, don't share your sense of humor and values, but you were raised and grew up with them.

It seems as though to be willing to NOT be ones self is to be being ones self.

@Cidknee Interesting take, but I think I disagree with you there. If you feel like you're somewhat holding back or repressed in an environment, even if it's just a little, it means you're not being yourself.

@thegreenyogi I tried that, and the next day I had several big policemen knocking on my front door! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Not really. I am literally a man in the West in the 21st century. Given that being is only formally not a crime round these parts anymore... Yeah, I definitely cannot truly be myself. This does not mean, however, that I am not myself. Funny how I'm right-wing, but also as ACAB-y as it gets, at least for now that the police is mostly used to persecute men (I do not live in the USA, just so it's abundantly clear - and I am very much pro-ICE, just not pro the men-eat-shit-and-die-cops we have in Poland).

Unfortunately no matter how hard you try to be yourself in every way possible there will always be restrictions where people in power believe they know best for everyone by making rules/regulations to abide by. But if you take the risk anything is possible when it comes to being yourself.

I will say this. am I accepted by everyone no. I've learned to be okay with that. You have to make your own peace with it and not worry about what the rest of the world is thinking. what does it matter if they like it or care. if they do great!!! If they don't keep it pushing. not everyone is gonna like you. so find the people that do.

Not completely , society always comes with expectations, norms, and pressures.

But within certain spaces, relationships, and mindsets, it’s possible to be authentic.

Truly being yourself often means finding the right balance: expressing who you are while navigating the world’s demands, and choosing environments where your true self is respected and valued.

i think it depends on where you live. i feel like in the us you have a lot of freedom to be who you are, we don't have this super conformist judgmental culture where 'the nail that sticks out gets hammered in'. but in other countries it's not really like that.

For the yes it would have to be like
    1. You have to be comfortable being others uncomfy at the expense of prioritizing yourself
    2. Sometimes i feel like, you have to know your audience and time and place to say these things

Sadly, not 100% But I still believe in hope, resilience, safe community, dignity and worth of an individual, and social justice.
Though I still remain nothing, but myself and that's all I want to be.

    My personal self? Yes.

I'm not so sure about others given the current predicament my country is in. That’s sad for certain people.

Sure. You just have to place yourself in the circumstances where you belong and not care so much about what other people think.

Yes. But you most likely are going to live a very lonely life for the most part.

If you act fake that makes people feel comfortable because they are acting fake as well so you fit right in and make many "friends"

Not everyone can only openly truly be themselves with little consequence at any given time. exeptable societal norms always change suppressing others while liberating others.
