Recently I have been listening to 60's music on YouTube and I came across "The Ballad of the Green Berets".

It was a massive number one hit single in 1966 and was a time of the Vietnam War years.

The patriotic song was co-written and performed by Green Beret Staff Sergeant Barry Saddler, who was deployed to Vietnam from late December 1964 to May 1965, where he was wounded in the knee by a Viet Cong punji stick booby trap while on patrol.

He wrote this song while recovering from his wounds.

Not particularly. I mean, I’m from here (USA), so it’s the home country I’ve got. Great standard of living, personally; but I’m not too proud of the way our government goes about business, and more recently, I’m very alarmed by the poor values and moral decline of our citizenry at large.

I have a level of gratitude for being born here in terms of my lifestyle; but I don’t get societally guilted into mandatory and performative patriotism. I think all of that stuff is very hollow, frankly. And I don’t think gratitude or perceived patriotism is a requirement for residency in any country.

Patriotism is a private feeling one might have about their homeland that, despite what the government (and military recruiters!!!) and “obedient citizens” may try to tell you, is neither positive nor negative; just neutral. You’re not a better or worse person or citizen for feeling patriotic or not; there’s no prize or merit given for loudly loving your country a lot.

That’s all well and fine if your country isn’t doing anything egregiously harmful that you’re enthusiastically supporting. But it’s not like “everybody who wears flag designs on their clothing, and invokes the most names of dead soldiers, and gets the most choked up when they play the anthem at the ball game are “the good ones””, just categorically, lmfao. I think that’s a pretty big societal misconception.

Anyway, if I had to pick something….

Yes, absolutely. Obviously I'm aware that the government has done some terrible things, but that's true of every country.

I'm a huge believer of merit-based systems and the ideas espoused in the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution. I also strongly believe that authority comes with responsibility and you cannot have the former without an equal measure of the latter.

I also believe that while immigration is and has always been important to America, only those who embrace American culture and American values should be allowed in, and that assimilation is a bare minimum requirement.

As for a song, it's hard to beat Lee Greenwood's God Bless The USA.

[MrOracle]

I have Barry Saddlers album on vinyl. It was a brand new unopened original pressing of my dad's, and it has only been played once, on my best turntable, to record it.

I like where I live, but to me, the term patriotism always seems to carry an unpleasant taste. It's a word the wrong sort of people wrap themselves in to justify their personal ideologies.

But for patriotic songs it's a choice between

[purplepoppy]

Looks black to me

[Iron_Man]

That’s because he’s very tan. He lays underneath suntan lamps when he was alive. unfortunately, he passed away not long ago.

[Iron_Man]

Any plans for Halloween? Are you going out?

[purplepoppy]

Watching the weather, think best I'll manage is a warm pub that serves hot food

[Iron_Man]

Nice I wish I was with you we could have a nice little dinner at the pub

[Kvass]

Extremely. My ancestors paid for this land with their blood. Loving my homeland is the least I can do.❤️

I'm proud to be an American where at least I know I'm free

[goaded]

Not really, considering I have dual nationality and wasn't born in either country.

Best patriotic song? By a mile:

As an American, I think "America The Beautiful" is our best patriotic song. It should be the national anthem. "The Star Spangled Banner" is an embarrassment. It's militaristic words put to the drinking song, "To Anacreon in Heaven".

[loveslongnails]

Uh huh... I'd post the video but GAG would probably scold me, so you have to look it up yourselves. My fav patriotic song is "Rednecks" by Randy Newman.

[loveslongnails]

Hopefully people will understand what sarcasm is all about if you bother to look up this song.

[Sunrising]

I asked the question, and I take great interest in people's opinions, nothing is to much trouble for myself 🙂

[loveslongnails]

Well in that case, have fun.

[Sunrising]

👍 🙂 👍

The song, from 1966, was used in the opening titles of "The Green Berets", a 1968 John Wayne movie.

My favorite patriotic song is "Star and Stripes Forever" by John Philip Sousa.

This is a very good version but without the lyrics and chorus by the US Marine Corps Band.

Here are 2 versions with singing by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir

Of course, the Vienna Philharmonic is always spectacular.

And another great version in the UK.

No American anthem makes me get as teary as Stars and Stripes Forever.
THAT should be our national anthem!

[slatyb]

The Marseillaise, best national anthem ever. I'm not French.

This captures the quintessential nature of the Australian culture I grew up in. Alas.

@Maybe_Maybe_not Because you asked.

[Maybe_Maybe_not]

Ah, thanks, I like explanations made of music!

[FunkyMonkee]

Although it has a few flaws that need to be dealt with, I love my country but, I'm not a huge flag waver. Besides, where I am, if I put one out, some asshole democrat would try to burn it!!

[exitseven]

i always liked God Bless America.

[FreyaRed]

Patriotism is for fools. I'm only loyal to my family and clan.

[molonski2]

Not really , it's mosts a USA thing in my experience.

[KostasKouvalis]

Nope

[msc545]

I am not a patriotic person. At this point, there is nothing about the U. S. to be proud of or patriotic about. I wish I didn't live in this country, and if I could afford to, I would leave.

[Iron_Man]

Do you celebrate July 4?

[msc545]

@Iron_Man no, of course not. There's nothing to celebrate about

[Iron_Man]

Do you wanna move out of America? Where do you wanna live at?

[msc545]

Spain, Italy almost anywhere in Europe.

[Iron_Man]

Then why dont you make plans and move to Europe and become a citizen of that country that you moved to and turn your USA citizenship in before you leave This is not a good place for you America apparently

[msc545]

@Iron_Man 1. I cannot afford to.
2. Even if I could afford to, I don't speak Italian or Spanish, so it would be extremely difficult for me to practice in either of those countries. The only country where I could conceivably practice would be the UK, and I'm not really willing to move to the UK since its economy is apparently almost as bad as the US' almost. I'm afraid I'm stuck here. At least I live in the most beautiful or second most beautiful state in the country, and our politics here are consistent with what my own are.
