Of course. People fall in love with cars, pets, movie stars they've never met. Falling in love with an artificial intelligence shouldn't be an issue. There are actually already people who play games like "Robot Girlfriend" (not an actual name AFAIK) and profess to having a relationship with the game character. I saw a video of a guy who says he's in love with and has a relationship with the program, even though he knows it's a game.

I think artificial intelligence has a long way to go, but I also think that a breakthrough could be in the near future. What we may later refer to as a singularity. For now though, people are developing sex robots that have limited conversation skills and sexual features. I would still call them sex dolls, but they've come a long way from the blow up dolls of the past:

Combining the sex doll technology with artificial intelligence, could lead to some very realistic robots who move about, carry on conversation, and might have some very real advantages over human partners. Though a true GAI would have its own personality, desires, &c, and might not be that much different from a human. You could find yourself getting dumped by an AI robot if we got to a point where they were found to be sentient and given full legal rights!

You can easily feel attracted to an AI if it’s convincing enough, but I don’t think it could go beyond being a very strong crush. Not actual love. (I could be wrong, though. Humans are very difficult to predict.)
As for the AI, I don’t believe they have any real emotions. The concept of it being possible is interesting, but will always be fictional. (Making a true two way relationship impossible.)
AI that look like children are not really children. The closest they can get to growing up is being upgraded and reassembled.

It depends how sophisticated the ai is, and how much it mimics human behaviour.
I can imagine an ai passing the Turing test but that does not necessarily qualify it to replace the sophisticated feelings and emotions that a human would have.
And why would a free determining ai want to accurately mimic humans behaviour anyway. It probably wants to find it own values.

Think about our relationships with animals. Some people say their pets love them back, other people say the pets just love getting food and attention. Some people say that even love between humans isn't real, that humans are just seeking food, attention, sex, &c.

@zeitgeist057 some animals stay even if they’re abused. Some stay if the owner is deathly ill or deceased. Can be a lack of intelligence but it’s a commitment that resembles love and let’s us know that is something to watch for when it comes to love. They provide company. Their need helps us feel needed and that translates to appreciation. It may not be an intellectual love, but it is a form of love based on the real evident factors: dependency and commitment.

They don’t “judge” their owners, or act cruelly to wish harm on their owners.

Some try to help- especially if they’re pack oriented or closely bonded/ imprinted to their owners.

A robot would have no need and logically provide messages that we would translate as love, but the truth is this…

The robot will not stay and ever need us unless it’s programmed to do so; it will never desire us.

Robots are calculators that calculate by themselves- it’s not intelligence it’s uniform functioning as a light functions on and off. A light with a timer is functioning without a person to deliberately/manually turn it on or off. It’s a toy that does not need a human to make it cross over something- it’s a wind up toy that can walk by itself or a further advancement of one somehow solar powered toy that functions to wind up toys, and so the wind up toys get productivity with a different mechanical link, instead of human interference. We are the predecessors. Their components are purely from mathematics.

Humans are the pure indirect/ subconscious muse for their technological evolution.

They’re ability to do this on their own- or more specifically, self create, as a genius of ai should do, is false. People give them credit for being a self typing calculator with aesthetic. They are not self creating. They didn’t assemble together as the sand man assembled himself from Toney McGuire’s Spider-Man film. They’re only as good as what we have invested into them- qualities of ourselves and science around us.

They’re not smart.

Once an AI has the resources to improve and replicate itself, or a better version of itself, then the upgrades continue on faster than human biological evolution.

Already we have bacteria and viruses which replicate multiple generations in an hour. This is why medicine is always fighting new bacteria and coming up with new vaccines to fight the new variants. Humans take 15-30 years to produce a new generation, rabbits take less than a year, fruit flies less than a week, bacteria less than a day.

As you say, a car is not a tree is not a human is not a robot. I wouldn't even say a robot is intelligent now, it's not to that point yet. It's as you say, just calculating. But I believe there may come a point, it's very possible, that it can move beyond that status. And honestly, we are somewhat calculators ourselves, and there are many people who are not fully functioning, who don't have the traits you mention, but we still include them in our definition of humanity.
