The tool that is simpler in make up and not as simple in function.
In this case the match.
Besides it resembles sticks of wood 🪵 used for starting and fueling fires and in many old movies you’ll see matches used before you see any lighters. Fortunately enough, you’ll see many MANYYY cigarettes and lightings because for some reason this is what made certain movies or scenes lol It was either seen as cool back then, or just normal.
If I’m wrong, so be.
But everything in my reason and memory bank is saying match stick. Then lighter.
It could be the match or it could be the lighter & some say one thing & others could say something else. Stay tuned or feel free to look it up.
A question is a question & I’m not offended & although you spoiled the fun & looked it up I should of stated somewhere in the question no cheating. It’s ok, life moves on. Hahaha.
It’s all in good fun & no need to apologize & as for your ❤️ I’m sure it’s a lovely one. I have to pull up the history on lighters. I think the earlier ones didn’t have any fluid.
Ancient peoples used flint stones, which in my thoughts are equivalent to "lighters."
They created sparks and ignited mosses, or other dry tinder, which was then transferred to wood or coals to create a big fire. Matches are an 1826 invention. Very late to the game.
And modern lighters, which use gasoline or compressed natural gases, couldn't exist until oil was drilled in the 19th century. Gasoline is byproduct of oil, and natural gas is found along with oil in certain strata.
First oil was found in the 1870s in Pennsylvania. So even later. But flint has existed forever and humans knew how to use it at least 300,000 years ago.
By the idea, it would be matches. Because the earliest way of making fire was through friction. Except the word "matches" didn't come out that time. People used sticks or flint and steel or something flammable along with it which pretty much has the same mechanics with matches before lighters came out. Even if it says lighters are made first before matches, there is still a chance that other non English natives use an ancient word for matches in their language that could be named after the fire starter they used to make fire before.
I think the matches otherwise why would would we need matches if the lighter was first? Although the concept of the lighter was sort of there when we used flint against steal with gunpowder as a fuel to fire a gun we never used it in a portable form with liquid until much later even though we had lamps with whale oil as fuel
I think the matches as well & do you think self striking matches or books came first.
Self striking
Oopsie not self striking, strike anywhere.

I Will Guess First---Match... Lighters were invented before matches! The first lighter was invented in 1823 while the match was created in 1826. lol!!! I Get No MHO. xxoo
AI Bot might give you some MHO’s & it’s funny how we can only pick two people for MHO’s & AI BOT can pick three or four.
lol!!! Maybe and @Static_In_The_Attic There was One Time You Could Choose Three or Even Two Girls and Two Guys. xxoo
It’s funny about points & after I reached master it’s like I don’t care about points anymore, maybe we need a Super Master or something else maybe a Professor Level.
lighters were invented before matches! the first lighter was invented in 1823 while the match was created in 1826
Did you know that before you looked it up?
lol this feels like the first time they made a complex invention first and THEN the simpler one. #mindblown and #litquestion #punintended 😆
Like the one with all the gadgets was constructed and then a chemist made a chemical that could be swiped with friction. That’s incredulous! Thanks for the fact sharee
Ohhhhh burrnnn 🔥 🤣😆
That was a good one @Static_In_The_Attic
Lmao but tbh I vote we make one but for both genders just because everyone is wild. I heard of some chastity belt- like once- and still don’t get it, but maybe that helps people? Or is that just mythical stuff? I honestly don’t know lol
Actually you're correct for thinking matches was made first. Except it just looks so different and wasn't named "matches" before.
The lighter, it's just flint and steel, a match is a chemical that they dip a stick of wood into and I feel like flint and steel came before red flamey chemical.
If it’s the lighter why did they make matches? Maybe they were cheaper?
The first lighters were probably build by cavemen hitting flint with steel makes sparks then they probably used the sparks to make fire, those were the first lighters, then humans added gas and when you click the flint and steel and mix it with the gas makes a flame but before it was sparks on wood or sparks on dead grass and plants and they made fire that way, it was only advanced to what we know of today lighters.
@Static_In_The_Attic @ChicoFromThe305
Yeah but
Yeah but
Two sticks and friction HAD to come before flint and steel
Rightttt?
😭
I guess that all depends on what the red part of the match is made of and how when they made it
matches were invented in 1805, lighters were invented in 1823.
As for matches were the self striking ones invented first or match books?
I’m going to have to research matches a little more.
I imagine it would be the lighter. A match requires a really good substance at the tip that has to be engineered. Lighters have a rock and some fuel.
Despite being credited to John Walker in 1826, British physicist Robert Boyle technically created the first friction match in 1680 by coating coarse paper in phosphorous, and a splinter of wood in sulphur. When the wood was drawn through the folded paper, it burst into flames. A German chemist named Johann Wolfgang Döbereiner in 1823 invented the lighter, often called Döbereiner's lamp.
i think sulphur dioxide was found before butane
The lighter. I remember that Fred Flintstone had one.
I actually know this one; it's the lighter.
Speaking of lighters & you might know this one. As for the early lighters did they have liquid fuel or not? Also I hear if you light a lighter in space the flame is blue.
Here's the bigger question: what SHAPE would the flame be? My guess is spherical, but I obviously haven't been able to test it.
the "lamp"
I like the lamp from A Christmas Story…
Rubbing two stones together, creating a spark, actually came first.
REALLY? You don't know?
I know however I found a few different answers.
It's not really a thought, I know matches came first.
A match
As for matches do you think match books or self striking matches were invented first?
Oopsie I mean strike anywhere not self striking.
