Do you use BIOMETRICS to access your phone or computer?

Modern devices like smartphones and computers can be configured to use biometrics (ex: fingerprints, facial recognition) to identify the user and grant access to the device. Biometrics replace older security systems like passwords, passcodes, and PINs.

Do you use biometrics on your phone or computer, or do you continue to use passcodes?

If you do, have you thought about what might happen if you are incapacitated and someone else needs to access your device?

I gave biometrics a whirl but found it painful. A passcode always work and sometimes biometrics requires fiddling. Mostly I want a phone to be a phone.

Mostly I just take two levels of security 1/financial bodies 2/everything else e. g. GAG

I'll have two levels of passwords accordingly. One very secure and one quite mundane and hackable.

I also have two levels of signatures. One for the bank and one for most everything else.

I find two factor annoying also.

I do. I activate face lock, fingerprint lock and also pattern lock everytime I get a new device, so in case if it fails to recognise my face in case the room is too dark, I can unlock it with fingerprint if my hand is oily because I just applied some moisturise. In that case, patten lock will be useful.

I'm using the gesture one, the one you can, sometimes, decipher when you look closely at finger marks on the screen lol. I tried biometrics on one phone, it didn't work smoothly, I quit using it. If I was incapacitated? I never thought about that, noted !

I swear blind it would probably be easier to break into the Bank of England, than it is to access our works computer systems.

As for my own personal phone/computer etc. I have passwords on both, which my husband also knows... I also know his passwords.

Passwords: they are individual and not associated with unchangeable features of mine.

Anything that can identify me as a person elsewhere - accidentally or intentionally is against my core values:

I don't want to be spied on, I don't want to be predictable or transparent.

My face, voice and my fingers are mine only. For now, that is.

I do not have any biometrics on my phone as there us nothing on it that requires that level of security, no banking details, credit/debit card wallet, or any personal details outside of my basic phone book.

My PC is air-gapped so it also doesn't have any biometrics this is where I do my private business, my Laptop has no important information on it - It has a 26 character password just to secure it from idle snooping as this is how I send emails etc.

The right to not self-incriminate prevents forcing you to unlock phones or tech in general using codes. But in most countries that doesn't apply to fingerprints or any biometric method - because those are all openly visible.

I use one of those join the dot things on my phone. I know it's daft but i worry I'll get a scratch on my finger and it won't be recognised

No it’s too risky and unreliable but I use a combination of other methods and switch between them for convenience. On the phone, at first glance it looks like there’s no security though.

I do use my finger to get in to my phone but if your finger is wet or dirty it won't let you but then I just use my pass code
