Why do some people call internet forums social media and yet other people say internet forums are not social media?

The entire concept behind "social media" was to report on yourself. It plays to people's narcissistic tendencies to boast about their own lives. It's marketed to the public as a way to keep up on what your friends or associates are doing and to establish social networks that connect people to other people to form friendships, find jobs, etc.. In reality it was engineered to conduct domestic spying on people and analyze the connections between networks of people (i. e. terrorism surveillance). 9/11 attacks occured in 2001. PATRIOT Act gets passed to conduct surveillance on networks of people. Facebook (DARPA: LifeLog) released 2004 to collect data points. If you are reporting on yourself, then it is social media. If you are reporting on anything else, then it's not social media. This is why Social Media sites are profile centric. The sites are designed to fish as much personal data as possible from a user. Before social media, everyone knew that was a scam, but the mainstream media brainwashed large swaths of the public to go along and with the government's demands. Collectivists like to fit in, so they surrendered their privacy to feel like a cool kid.

It's pretty easy to understand how people will boast about what they have done and what they have heard from their friends and associated about what they have done. All gossip is now posted to the internet to be data mined in real time to maintain a global surveillance network. It's weird how people just do what their told to fit in... Asch conformity experiments... They're rat themselves out and their friends... They will take experimental gene therapy "vaccines"... Complete craziness...

Internet forums come in many platforms and packages. Some even imitate the big networks like Facebook, and Tiktok. But social media encompasses all online, interactive real time media comms.

I am not sure if your question is about this site or not. I just found it yesterday, but I wouldn't consider this place social media. Definitely an internet forum, and apparently I'm in the camp that does not equate those.

Technically, internet forums were the very first social media. However, most people often use “social media” to refer specifically to the era of algorithm-driven, profile-centric apps like Instagram, Facebook, or X.
