No one wants a beautiful vacation ruined by the theft of their stuff, but it happens, and it happens all the time. You don't always have the luxury of locking up your stuff in a safe in a hotel room or it's necessary for what you're doing to bring your valuables along with you. So what can you do to keep them safe?
1. Wear a Travel/Joggers Pouch
These pouches are excellent protection for several reasons: they are small but spacious enough for your phone/passport/money. They strap in close to the body and can be easily hidden under longer or flowy tops. They eliminate a lot of extra bulk you have to carry around like a purse or other small bag which can make you a target for criminals.
2. Obvious valuables aren't obvious anymore
You know, what DO you do with your phone, keys, and money on a beach? It's not like you can run in the ocean with a bag on. An easy way to protect your valuables is to tuck them away in something that is not obvious to thieves like an old deodorant bottle, bug spray can, or bottle of coke. Bring your "book" to the beach which can really be a book safe or hollowed out book where you can store your valuables. You can either buy these types of safes online or you can make them yourself.
3. Hide items in your hotel in plane sight
Just like beach safes, the same goes for hiding things in your hotel room. Sometimes, the hotel safe is not the best place to hide your belongings as they too can sometimes be stolen. Put your valuables in places thieves aren't likely to be searching for like inside of a tampon box, your coffee mug, a hollowed out tissue box, your pillow case, you name it. Almost anything can be made into a safe with which to help you hide your valuables.
4. Bait and switch
Sure, it can be incredibly satisfying to buy some super expensive brand name stuff overseas where it can be a lot cheaper, but those shopping bags they give you to show them off to passersby are also the same ones criminals look for. Instead, put valuables in less desirable bags like your McDonald's brown paper bag from lunch or a regular grocery shopping bag. The same goes for your expensive camera equipment. I mean, it is very nice to have a suitable camera bag with you, but with a giant brand name splashed on back of it, it's an easy target on your back. You just turn around for a second to talk to a stranger in a bar after setting your bag down, and a thief snatches it knowing full well what's inside. So don't make it easy. Use label less bags or ones to things thieves may not find appealing.
