As a California resident, there's rarely any advantage and plenty of disadvantage for doing so. California has stricter emissions standards than most states, and often requires emissions equipment that other states lack, or tuning that other states lack, and because cars are tested every other year, if your car doesn't pass, you either pay to get it up to spec, or you junk it, because it's no longer drivable. Given what it can cost to get an out-of-state car to pass California SMOG checks, it's rarely worth the hassle and expense.

Also, because the state is so large (by land and population), you can almost always find whatever car you want in the state before too long. And, because of California weather, we don't have the rust-corrosion problems that plague the cars from many other states, so it's almost always to our advantage to buy an in-state car.

Because I live on a state that makes it extremely difficult and expensive to have a car here in general. And then there’s separate fees to register your car to this state. I paid $1800 to register my car, when if I bought this car in state, it would’ve been less if not free and I wouldn’t have had to wait as long as I did to register it. It’s extra steps.

I have twice, it’s just a pain when it comes to registration and title, once time it was fine when I bought a car in Florida from my dad it was not bad but when I bought a car from a dealership in Georgia it took so long to get my title and registration because how different they do things in New York compared to there
