The anthem is a symbol of celebration that we live in the freest country ever to exist on the earth. Say what you will about it and point out faults, but no other civilization has ever granted and protected so many rights for so many. When you disrespect the anthem, lots of people interpret that as saying you don't love being here. Imagine how you'd feel if people came to your birthday party and when the cake came out, all of your friends simply sat there and refused to sing. You'd feel like they hated you and didn't want your birthday to be happy one - yet they all wanted free cake.
I understand why this guy is protesting. There have been terrible injustices done recently to people of all colors. Some of the police shootings have been particularly troubling. The funny thing is that in a country without the freedoms given to everyone here, you wouldn't be allowed to protest the national anthem. Try that in China or North Korea. He pulls down an NFL salary and then protests. Sad.
@LindsayRB91rds: I think you're buying into American propaganda a bit too much. We're certainly a relatively developed and free nation, but we're by no means the most free. There actually happen to be studies that actually rank nations by personal and economic freedom, and I have not yet found any that rank the US at the top. Generally we place somewhere in the top 10-20, but not the very top. Unsurprising really if you actually pay attention to the amount of injustice that still occurs in the US.
@cipher42 Thanks for pointing out the index - I didn't realize it existed. You're referring to the Cato index presumably. That's rather heavily weighted on "economic freedom" which understandably we suck at now. On that list, Hong Kong is the most "free" but on other lists they horribly on freedom of the press. I need to look more into this Cato thing. I still wouldn't go to China or the Chinese-run Hong Kong on a bet.
I do appreciate your pointing out this index. Not all experts agree on its value and I'm going to read up on it.
@LindsayRB91rds The anthem was written by a slave-owner as a celebration of the freedoms of "White Anglo-Saxon Protestants." Some of my ancestors were Irish, and they were treated like shit here in America during the 1800s (along with Asians, Eastern Europeans, and various other "unwelcome" ethnic groups that weren't WASPs).

the first amendment protects his right to protest, he's allowed to do it. i may not agree with him, buttt he's certainly allowed to do what he's doing
Thank you so much for this.
I'm so confused, why so much controversy over a friggin' anthem? -_-
