Is Slavophobia on the rise in the US and Europe?

Nope... About 4.5% of the US population (~6% of white population) identify as being of Slavic decent when questioned on a census (real numbers are likely higher). In WWI and to some extent WWII Slavic peoples were generally allied to the USA. We had a quarrel with Eastern Slavs during the cold war due to the U. S. S. R. but we wanted the people to be freed and for the Berlin wall torn down and it eventually did come down in 1990. The USA intervened in Kosovo in the late 90s to bring peace to a region inhabited by southern Slavs. What do you want from us? We've historically been there for you throughout modern history and many Slavs immigrated to the USA to avoid religious persecution or to escape communism over the years.
Unless you live in Alberta seriously the kkk is relentless there they are places where it exist but it isn’t common just don’t go to the wrong place either people don’t know the difference between ethnic groups or don’t care and some cases like in Greece and parts of Canada crazy shit can happen
In UK maybe but there is a reason, one reason people voted leave in Brexit was that poles and other Eastern Europeans were doing jobs in cheaper salaries which made them more tempted to hire by business and companies so the Brits who already were hating on the Muslims for the same reason wanted them out or stop more from coming in. So that could be count as slavophobia. My opinion on the slavs is that I feel little ashamed for my ancestors (I'm part Berber/arab who enslaved a lot of South Slavs).
Thank you for saying that last part but it's all in the past. That was the British government's fault for not regulating immigration mote strictly, cheap labor drives down wages. Most polish are leaving returning home with the money they earned building houses and building up the polish economy.
I highly doubt most Europeans or Americans could tell the difference between a Slav and a Western European or an American. I've got Slavic blood and have never been discriminated against because of it. I would say that vast majority of people in the present consider a European a European regardless if their Western or Slavic. I highly doubt a good chunk of the population could even define Slav.
i voted yes - but that first video was too violent for me to enjoy - it seemed to almost glorify violence and slavic power - I don't believe in violence on any front - not even on the side that is morally right. The second video wasn't good either - they should teach little children to swear to make an interesting video.
Seems to be a lot of stuff that's anti eastern European countries mostly to do with politics and immigration

Only in liberal areas. Most slavophobia nowadays is based on the fact that Slavic countries are very conservative.
However if you ask someone with conservative views about their opinion on Slavic countries, they’ll usually express admiration for them. Slavic countries could care less about “political correctness” and are very proud of their cultures.
Look of all people I think slavs should be really careful when talking about being the victims of racism and genocide. Considering the holocaust was around 75 years ago but ethnically slavic Serbians committed genocide against muslim bosniaks less than 25 years ago. So it goes both ways
... and vice versa, it was a civil war after all.
Ethnic cleansing never happened in your country?
Slavs aren't the same as the western Europeans and we never enslaved or wiped out native people's in the new world. The word Slav is where the word slave comes from think about that. Think about it your people at one time enslaved a large portion of the world's population at one time with a lot of genocides.
Serbs brutally committed genocide against the Muslim Bosniak population which are native to the area. I don't see how that's any different. Yes, unfortunately white australians committed atrocities against the indigenous population, I'm not denying that but it doesn't take away from the fact that yes slavs did commit genocide at some point. And what do you mean by 'my people' despite being 100% european I don't come from a singular 'people'
Muslim Bosnians helped the Nazis commit genocide on the slavs.
Your people were among the soldiers of the British empire which committed genocide on a global scale. Yes your people did hunt aborigines and their children like they were animals.
It doesn't change the fact that slavs still did it. I'm not saying the muslim bosnians are innocent in the whole course of history but I'm just saying maybe more than one ethnic group has been a perpetrator and victim of ethnic crime within Europe, not just slavs. Again your argument doesn't mean anything. History is horrible, brutal and unfair, all we can do is stopping it from happening again.
What is your point? This question is about Slavophobia.
It's litteraly just a description of Slavophobia.
Let me get this straight. You talk of the Srebrenica massacre, where 8000 Bosnians were murdered. Don't use the word "Bosniak", they are not an ethnic group, they are a country. No need to mistify anything. They aren't a minority or oppressed, they were at war with other nations. The people who commited the war crimes are being systematically killed or imprisoned even years after.
That's not even mentioning that Bosnians ARE slavic. They just have a different religion.
So you condemn an entire ethnic group for the killing of 8000 of their own people in a civil war, which is an internationally recognized warcrime, and has very little to do with how civilians act. Congratulations, you are an idiot.
@Benedek38 Ok I don't know a lot about muslim bosnian people but I'm pretty sure they do consider themselves a distinct ethnic group and have been considered as such. As @WhitePanther88 said why did muslim bosnian people fight for the nazis whilst the serbs were being killed? They clearly at a point in time were considered ethnically distinct. The whole concept of 'ethnicity' a lot of the time is rooted in social ideas not biology, especially in these small close together regions. So yes the bosniak people would be considered ethnically different from slavs in general.
@Benedek38 Would I tell an african-american that, probably not, because the contexts are entirely different. Black people aren't complaining about the that racism against them existed because of slavery but because they face discrimination in their everyday lives.
"Would I tell an african-american that, probably not, because the contexts are entirely different."
So which group wasn't names subhuman?
"Black people aren't complaining about the that racism against them existed because of slavery but because they face discrimination in their everyday lives"
Meanwhile Polish immigrants in Britain face discrimination on a daily basis. Hell, my Hungarian cousing went to the UK with a BSc in biology to get an MSc, and she couldn't find an intern job in her field of studies because her resume was routinely thrown back without an interview. She considered changung her name..
Poles do to. The French don't see themselves as Germans even though they are Germanics.
@Benedek38 so then why have they been treated as a distinct ethnic group in a historical sense?
I don't think Bosniaks consider themselves ethnically different, the conflicts in the Balkans were largely of religious and cultural origin.
And, for the most part, Serbs were actually on the receiving end of most of those conflicts, they were in a similar position as Jews- persecuted for both their religion and status.
Croats and Bosniaks killed far more Serbs during the world war II than Serbs ever killed Bosniaks.
Yes, Serbs did commit atrocities in more recent history, but to say that it takes away their right to complain about persecution is like to say that Black people don't get to complain about chattel slavery because some modern-day Black thugs kill people and commit crime too.
The Balkans is pretty much all Slavic that is just a fact
They have been fighting each other for basically as long as they have been defined as nations that are also just a fact
The only real exception was the time they were forcibly unified as Yugoslavia and were members of the Soviet sphere and it did not last long after that before they were back fighting each other
There are deep-seated cultural and religious hatreds going back 1000+ years no country or ethnic subgroup there is in any way innocent be it Bosnians Serbians Croatians or whatever
The region is and always has been a tinder pot and it goes off regularly
Overall Serbia came out of the fall of the iron curtain strongest in terms of military and so they have been somewhat aggressive but no side on the Balkan is innocent
I used to work with a Serbian guy married a Bosnian woman they had to flee so they wouldn't be killed... On either side of that particular conflict
They just really hate each other down there
Well, since you're no longer communists and it no longer appears that we are destined to incinerate each other in a nuclear Holocaust, most of us actually think well of you. Furthermore, you're the only part of Europe presently resisting your own invasion. Much respect; you are truly the children of Byzantium and the last of the lions of Europe. We seem to like most of the same things...
Except techno, what's up with all the goddamn techno?
the germans were jelly maybe, of the Slav Superiority... or maybe they simply went to an all out rampage destroying everyone around... but there is a reason for this paranoia, because of the Slavic multi state and the largest population of a single ethnos on the planet?
I am in favor of the pan Slavic option
No, the average man in the street would have to have it explained to him what a Slav was, and which countries were Slavic.
It might be on the rise amongst liberals, though. Those blasted Slavs and their traditional family values, etc.
I'm not sure if it's on the rise. Some people have those views but most people I know including myself have Polish friends.
Also the reason Hitler hated the Poles was because after WW1 under the Treaty of Versailles Germany was forced to cede some territory to other countries, Poland being one of them, and they persecuted the Germans who were still living there. He was looking for revenge - not a justification but also it wasn't for no reason at all.
Between the Russians and Germans Poland didn't exist for a long time. Hitler wanted to wipe out all slavs everywhere not just Poland.
Yeah, the reason he created National Socialism was to oppose the spread of communism from Russia across Europe which is why he hated Russia also. I think that there are two sides to the story and that we're taught a child-like version where the allies were the good guys and fighting against a man who wanted to conquer the world for no reason other than that he was an evil madman. In reality it's not so black and white, neither side was good but the victors write the history to paint it that way.
Hitler wanted to build a great Germanic empire in Europe, the East had the vast oil and mineral resources Germany would need to do this.
I have no knowledge of it being on the rise there has always been some animosity towards slavics... It is no coincidence that their name is a derivative of the word slave...
The present day animosity isn't particularly racially motivated though it is more in regards geopolitical and economic reasons
I'm part Ukrainian ( mixed with Hungarian from my mothers side ) and we have large Polish populations here , one of my daughters best mates is a Polska. No Slavphobia here , they tend to work hard and do their best to fit in with the rest of the population , unlike certain other groups !!
A lot of Slavs are Muslim especially in Bosnia and Herzegovina and southern Bulgaria. And America and Europe hate Muslims.
Look at the abuse khabib got.
1) Khabib ain't slav. Not that it matters.
2) He got abuse because he was an arrogant asshole. Conor too. That fight should have happened in a respectful way, instead it was a shitshow. I just hope we see a rematch between two level-headed fighters some day, and Khabib won't run away with the title.
@Benedek38 I know but he did get a lot of abuse because he's from Russia. He's an avar as far as I know.
He's Dagestani, whatever that means.
And he got a lot of hate because
1) Conor fanboys.
2) Because he is a genuine dick. There are videos of him and his buddies throwing money at drunk homeless so they dance, kicking homeless peopel on the streets, etc... His family is involved in some kind of criminal activity... he's an all around horrible person. But I guess that doesn't matter when you are a UFC lightweight champion.
@Benedek38 that's fame and the UFC for you. They only like you when your the champ.
Likely lots of jews wrapped in there too. Nazi's were definitely warped.
True but the slavs tend to get forgotten about despite the 20-30 million deaths.
Wife is a polish jew. Go figure eh?
A brunette with ivory skin. And a bottle of vodka in the freezer. :)
Perfect woman by the sounds of it
Thirty years together. She was 27 when I met her and undoubtedly the very most beautiful woman I had ever laid eyes on. The only problem was I was already married with a kid. Then had another. Holy cow, that divorce cost me right about a half-mil.
People ask why divorce costs so much... BECAUSE IT'S WORTH IT!!
I personally don't like Slavs very much but I don't think there is a general tendency towards slavophobia in Western Europe or America.
Slavophobia?
Honestly first I heard of it but you are right about the nazis during world war 2 - Maybe it all got sidetracked by the inter fighting in the Balkans
I don't understand why "bigotry against X" is called "X-phobia". Anyone care to explain?
It's been prevalent here in non-Slavic Eastern Europe since we got our freedom from the CCCP
i haven't heard anything on this one... im partially german, does that make me... i mean... wait... after all these years.. i can be oppressed and triggered? Yeahhhhhhh!!!
i go make my owh shirt and stuff. this time I can be the official victim instead of actually evolve! justiceeee!!! 🤣
I'm not sure. I'm living in a Slavic country right now, so I haven't noticed anything here. In the US, where I lived, I'm sure most people couldn't tell you what a Slav is. So I don't know.
Slavophobia is definitely on the rise if you look at places like Canada Alberta you can find accounts of shit from the kkk and if you look at what Greece is rn and brexit it doesn’t paint a beautiful picture from where I am nobody cares as I live in Milwaukee but there are lots of stereotypes and other shit on media and with a lack of representation It feels like being made fun of but then people saying it doesn’t exist it’s just insulting
It's just a shame that we have to even ask these questions- but I digress. If someone calls me a "cheap bohunk" I take it as a compliment.
I don't think so, the only phobia there is, is probably against people like Putin since you're never certain what they're up to on their way to getting more power :-(
