How Many Species Have Gone Extinct in the Past 20 years?

I just heard a lady on the Fareed Zakaria show say that 150 species go extinct every DAY! What? So I pulled out my calculator. 365 X 150 = 54,750 species in a year. 20 x 54,750 =
1,095,000 species in 20 years.

Then I googled extinctions in a day and found an article that mentioned the same 150/day number. But at the end of the article, it had another stat: "According to IUCN data, only one animal has been definitely identified as having gone extinct since 2000. It was a mollusc."

So now I know extinctions over a 20-year period is estimated to be somewhere between 1 species and 1 million species.

The 150 per day thing is a crackpot fake science claim made by radical left lunatics.

First of all, there are only about 20 million species of land life forms in existence, and most of those are plants, algae, bacteria, and insects. Secondly, man-made global warming is only about 1C on average for the planet. This is not enough ot drive pretty much anything extinct, not even a temperature sensitive insect such as a European Honeybee... they'll just fly somewhere else. The Amazon is one of the hottest places on Earth, and it has more life than anywhere on land, so increasing land temperature a few degrees will not cause extinctions. In fact, at first, an increase of 1 or 2C will actually increase the amount of land and ocean that can support life, as the glaciers will recede and plants can grow in their place, and then animals can live with eating the plants. So this whole notion of mass man-made extinction is not even remotely factual in the short term. Now if Global Warming increases temperatures by SEVERAL degrees Celsius that could be a problem and could lead to extinctions, but don't be duped by this nonsense about man-made warming causing extinctions. The greatest killer of life on this planet is still the ordinary glacial maximum which happens about once every 112,000 years.

The problem is we don't really know how many species we have all ready. Many species have been named scientifically more than once, others have been ignored as a separate species. Calculations based on yearly discovery rates vary but all agree there are millions of undiscovered species. The bulk of these are insect size down to bacteria. New species arise daily before going extinct just as fast without anyone noticing. So to answer the question probably millions

Extinction isn't always negative, often it's because a species has evolved into a new one.

Quite a few have. Some naturally, some due to adverse living conditions that didn't sustain those species, some were competitively eliminated by other species and some for other reasons I'm not sure of
