The Art of Falling

It came across my mind a couple of days ago, why the verb "fall" is used to indicate the action of "love", what could be the relation! why not any other verb than fall!

It's even more interesting when you think about it that we say "fall in love" when it's strong enormous love, not just normal love. There's a big difference between when someone loves something or someone, and when he falls in love with that something or someone.

Let's leave falling in love with places, food and other stuff in life aside, and speak about the verb "fall" with the word "love" when it comes to people, as it makes more sense.

When I looked up the synonyms of fall, I gave it even a deeper thought and found out that the verb "fall" really fits with "love".

Have you ever woke up one day and planed to fall off the stairs? Or have you decided one afternoon to go out and slip by a banana skin and fall? Of course NO.

And that's the case with love, you never plan to fall in love with someone, it just happens. And if you truly love someone, then you are really head over heals for that person, in other words, you fall for this person.

It's like you are walking and there's this big hole in front of you but you can't see it, and you cant avoid what you can't see. You just don't know that by taking that next step forward, you will fall into this hole, in other words, love.

Wow, if you look at it from this perspective, everything will just fall into place, you will understand why is it hard and painful to breakup, or to lose the person you love, coz you simply have to stand up again after a big fall, and definitely this is painful. You have gone a long way down this hole you fell into, and you just stare up and see no ladders, no elevators, no escalators, you can see nothing around you that can help you get out. You need a miracle.

The other thing I deduced from this is that when you fall in love, you just can't replace this love by falling in love with someone else, it will be like falling when you are already down, and this is even more hurtful and painful. Imagine a handicapped person falling of his wheelchair!

This is why you cant get over someone or forget someone by someone else. You need to stand up first to be able to "fall in love again" or you will be doubling the pain on you, coz you know you can't fall for two at a time. Look at it this way, you can't stand up on one foot, you have to stand up on the two, and when you fall, it's the same.

Now it's easy for me to understand how some people can fall in love once, twice, thrice….etc. They just developed the ability of standing up quickly and are ready to fall again. This is "The Art of Falling", to fall, but not to break any ribs or bones, to be able to stand up again and continue with life.

On the other hand, some people fall in love, and are not able to rise up again, they become handicapped from this "fall". Maybe forever, maybe for a while. It depends on the will to go on and the severity of the fall.

True Love is all about falling and enjoying the fall, you don't get to choose when to fall, or how to fall or where to fall. It just happens.

Some people in life are very cautious not to fall, but it's destined for them to walk on a slippery spot and just fall. So is true love, you can't avoid it, if you are destined to "fall in love" , you will "slip into that love".

I guess the inventors of the English language really knew the meaning of true love when they chose the verb "fall" to be the verb that accompanies the action of " loving truly, strongly and abundantly".

BabyJenks Very true...but it also hurts when you fall hard and realise there's nothing there to cushion that fall. Falling in love is like falling over and scraping your knees when you're little. Its OK if there's someone there to kiss it better, put a plaster on and help you up so you can carry on playing. But when you fall over by yourself, you sit there crying and in pain for a while hoping somebody will come and ease that hurt, until you dust yourself off and try not to fall next time. - 21 days ago
