15 Successful Albums, Which Came Out When Each Band Started

This is actually Part II, from my previous MyTake here .

This time I'll talk about albums which came out during each band's early years.

1) A Flock Of Seagulls - A Flock Of Seagulls (1982)

15 successful albums, which came out when each band started.

(Highest charting positions UK #32 US #10 CAN #5)

Well I won't say any more. Not the strongest debut in music history overall but still one of the best and one of the best sci-fi themed albums for sure.

2) America - America (1971)

15 Successful Albums, Which Came Out When Each Band Started

(Highest Charting Positions US #1 AUS #3 UK #14)

Although they came on strong when they started by climbing on the #1 spot, their popularity started to fade away as years went by. They made a comeback in the 80s though, with their big hit "You Can Do Magic". From this album "A Horse With No Name" was a #1 hit single as well, and still a classic in our days too.

3) The Animals - The Animals (1964)

15 Successful Albums, Which Came Out When Each Band Started

(Highest charting positions UK #6 US #7)

A band which was a big part of the notorious "British Invasion" back in the 60s. The hit single "The House Of The Rising Sun" went to #1 in both UK and US charts. Actually this song is a cover of a traditional Folk song. You can find more about it here . "Baby Let Me Take You Home" was a hit from this album too, yet a lesser one.

4) Asia - Asia (1982)

15 Successful Albums, Which Came Out When Each Band Started

(Highest charting positions US #1 UK #11 JPN #15)

Not many Western bands can make it in Japan as it seems, but Asia were one of the few. Technically Asia weren't fresh musicians since they were actually a supergroup by members from various successful Progressive Rock bands like King Crimson or Yes. Still it was their debut under the name "Asia" so it can be included here. Simply a masterpiece.

5) Boston - Boston (1976)

15 Successful Albums, Which Came Out When Each Band Started

(Highest charting positions: US #3 CAN #7 UK #11)

I'm pretty sure many of you might have a copy of this in your home, since it went Diamond status in US and Canada. "More Than A Feeling" was definitely the biggest hit of it, but it pretty much overshadowed the other 2 Singles, "Foreplay/Long Time" and "Peace Of Mind" which made it in the Top 40 only. Undoubtly one of the strongest debuts ever.

6) Men At Work - Business As Usual (1981)

15 Successful Albums, Which Came Out When Each Band Started

(Highest charting positions: AUS #1 US #1 UK #1)

Perhaps most successful debut by any Australian act. Well anyway I believe it deserved the position it got. And the lead single "Down Under" went #1 in many countries as well. Their follow up albums weren't so successful (especially their 3rd album) but they shouldn't be overlooked. Every song by them is memorable.

7) Foreigner - Foreigner (1977)

15 Successful Albums, Which Came Out When Each Band Started

(Highest charting positions: US #4 CA #9 NOR #1)

Their debut LP wasn't internationally successful, like "4" or "Agent Provocateur", but still it was highly successful in North America mostly, but it went to #1 in Norway as well. Their debut scored 3 Top 20 hits as well, particularly "Feels Like The First Time", "Cold As ice" and "Long, Long Way From Home".

8. The Knack - Get The Knack (1979)

15 Successful Albums, Which Came Out When Each Band Started

(Highest charting positions: US #1 CAN #1 UK #1)

One of the best examples of an "One hit wonder" band, mostly known for their all-time classic hit "My Sharona". Or maybe two I might say, since their song "Good Girls Don't" went #1 in Canada, but still it's forgotten in our days, and only "My Sharona" is still a classic hit. After "Get The Knack"

9) Kinks - Kinks (UK) / You Really Got Me (US) (1964)

15 Successful Albums, Which Came Out When Each Band Started

(Highest charting positions: UK #3 US #29)

Another famous band from the British Invasion era. Their song "You Really Got Me" went to Top 10 in many countries. Some months later they scored another Top 10 hit. "All Day And All Of The Night". They kept releasing albums till the 90s, but never managed to recapture the success they had during the 60s.

10) ABC - The Lexicon Of Love (1982)

15 Successful Albums, Which Came Out When Each Band Started

(Highest charting positions: UK #1 AUS #9 US #24)

A very strong debut. It went highly successful in many countries and scored 3 hit singles, "Poison Arrow", "The Look Of Love" and "All Of My Heart", and the 2 first singles became hits in US too. "The Look Of Love" topped Dance charts as well. Their later releases weren't so successful, but still they're an interesting band with a huge diversity of styles. Seems like there was also a secodn wave of "British Invasion" in the 80s too. So many British bands made it in US market by then.4

11) Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocs (1977)

15 Successful Albums, Which Came Out When Each Band Started

(Highest charting positions: UK #1)

I hardly believe how this album went to #1 since it was way too controversial by then standards. And apart from it, Sex Pistols' members never had the best behavior during their prime. But Sex Pistols became a phenomenon, even if they were a short-lived band, and they are considered Punk Rock legends. Also they scored several Top 10 hits in UK charts. Even though they didn't have any hit singles in other countries, their name is known all around the world.

12) Soft Cell - Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret (1981)

15 Successful Albums, Which Came Out When Each Band Started

(Highest charting positions: UK #5 US #22)

Obviously they were in the right place and at the right time. In 1981 many Synth-pop bands started to appear and Soft Cell was one of them. Their song "Tainted Love" (which was actually a cover version of Gloria Jones' "Tainted Love" ) went to #1 in many countries, and #8 in US charts. This album had 2 other Top 10 UK hits as well, "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye" and "Bedsitter".

13) The Police - Outlandos d'Amour (1978)

15 Successful Albums, Which Came Out When Each Band Started

(Highest charting positions: UK #6 US #23 CA #22)

One of the New Wave pioners and one of the first New Wave bands which included Reggae elements. Although their later albums were more successful it was a great start. And they became popular particularly from their song "Roxanne". The Police were a flawless band and they never released an album which failed to chart. Also they broke-up at the right time instead of keeping going on for years unlike most bands do.

14) Toto - Toto (1978)

15 Successful Albums, Which Came Out When Each Band Started

(Highest charting positions US #9 UK #37 JPN #39)

I should mention Japanese charts as well, since they were one of the few Western bands who made it in Japan (like Asia I mentioned above). Especially after their 3rd album and on. From here "Hold The Line" was the biggest hit going to the Top 10 and still one of their biggest hits ever. Two other singles were "Georgy Porgy" and "I'll Suply The Love". It's pretty well known Toto's actually a group of session musicians so they had some experience already, before they started.

15) Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Welcome To The Pleasuredome (1984)

15 Successful Albums, Which Came Out When Each Band Started

(Highest charting positions: UK #1 CA #9 US #33)

A highly controversial band, but despite the fact they released only 2 albums, they became a phenomenon, with a series of #1 hits, mainly in UK. Particularly, "Relax", "Two Tribes" and "The Power Of Love" became #1 hits, and "Relax" made it in the US Top 10. Personally I think their second album is better, although it wasn't as successful as their first one.
