What did he mean when he said "I love you to death"?

There's a man I know professionally and he asked me not to make public something he told me in confidence. He said, "(my name), I love you to death, but please don't write that." Caught me by surprise. A day later, he asked me to come to his office to pick up some information. His girlfriend was there - and he introduced her to me as his girlfriend - but then made a rather large show of giving me a hug. What should I make of this

it sounds like nothing. If you guys are friends, or have known each other for a long time, then saying "i love you to death" doesn't mean he has sexual feelings for you. I've said that to my male and female friends before, doesn't mean I like them. As for the hug, lots of people greet others they know with a big hug, you may of thought he made a show of it, but you could be just noticing every little detail because you like him or you think he likes you.

He sounds quite pathetic and untrustworthy to me. He probably just wanted a one night stand.
