Why this sh*ttty craziness with muscle building?
Personaly i'm skinny and proud... and i don't have any desire of adding muscle on my body
It definitely isn't the media, it is genetics and logic. Since the dawn of man he has needed to be better than animal and his tribe in certain aspects. The stronger, the faster, the smarter he is the better chance to survive and breed.
Muscle is more accessible for attractiveness as a general, it shows strength and dedication to looking after yourself. Muscle shows off the body's natural aesthetics. Men showing off muscle is like women showing off curves.
Some people like being sickly thin or androgynous, some people like being fat, some people like being healthy, some people like being muscled. There are people attracted to each group, admittedly definition is the most accessible but it also works on a competing with other potentials so it isn't just about looking good for the opposite sex.
I've been anorexic, I've over come it and gotten kinda fat and then worked on getting muscle. Muscle makes you feel better mentally as well as physically, muscle makes you look better and is something you can take pride in.
Because of media, and how it wants us to be.
EXACTLY!!! that's what i believe
I didn't know they had gyms in medieval England...
And your point is? ... Not every body was, and it was often because of fighting wars, etc...
And we're talking about an "obsession with building muscles" here, i. e going to the gym, taking protein shakes and/or steroids..
@monsieur, women actually have androgen, a type of testosterone, we can't get as big as a man, but we can develop muscles, the reason we can't is due to more that one factor, one we aren't built for that. Maybe you dont have huge muscles because you dont work them, to form those muscles. I said you have the capacity to do so because of testosterone, but without work there is no growth.
Here is a link about it:

Lol, since when did I get a response deleted?
@knotme, I don't think I said women can't get muscles, anybody can... I'm 6''6 and 200 lbs, I've got enough muscle as it is, and I'm perfectly comfortable with my size.
Most kids out their want big muscles because they think they're the key to women and fame, that's why you hear so many terrible stories of younglings ODing on steroids...
Denying media isn't involved with an obsession for big muscles is just pure ignorance.
You can't OD on steroids lol...
So you can't take too much steroid? You can't take too much that you'll pass out or die... don't make me laugh dude. You can overdose on stuff like water and salt too, did you know that?
The question was about building muscle, not going over board with it, and I stated my opinion why men want to build. You went off onto to excessive muscle building, and that's not how I read the question.
A body with muscle looks good, correct? Why would you not want to fault or get acknowledgment with your hard work, a person wants that with anything. I will say anything in excess can have a detriment on your body, but if you are building naturally, you are fine
You can be respected without the need of growing muscles... if you start building it's usually either completely for yourself, or you've succumb to media pressure.
Look at what you're saying right now @knotme... I have to have a body of muscle to "look good", to get full "acknowledgement" with my "hard work" ...
Question asker asked why people are obsessed with muscle building? I said the media is to blame, and how kids nowadays are sucked into the need to be "big", the need to look "dominant" ...
I could be the CEO of a multi million pound company, but skinny as hell and I'd still be proud of my achievements... why does it have to be about aesthetics?
Why do you think the media wants men to be muscular? What do they gain out of it?
What do they ever gain out of it lol... Media INFLUENCES young men to become bigger... just like it OBJECTIFIES women on a day to day basis... jesus christ.
Saying "media do it" is far too vague. All that can be known objectively is that, whether or not it's necessary to be happy, working out does have a lot of benefits for men and women.
If somebody muscular is being a dick to somebody skinny about being skinny, then it's the person being a dick that's bad, not the process of working out. Either way, not every built person is a New Jersey stereotype of condescension. If I had to go on my own experience, I'd say that generally muscular people use sarcasm less and speak more directly, but the point is that you can't go on a very small sample of information as true for all people.
Either way, Asker's feelings about being skinny and proud are silly, unless he's skinny by performing a great effort to get to that state for good reasons (i. e. if he was formerly obese). There is no "pride" in something that did not take effort to achieve. It sounds more like he means "I'm not happy about what people have said to me, so I'm saying that I'm proud here."
lol kinstome.. let him be proud of what he is will you? ... worry about your self and your problems.
I know a lot of people who are skinny and proud... they've never been bullied about it, they just like who they are... something you should do too hahahaha
Kinstome that's true... i've been oobese during my school years... being skinny now is far far better you know ;-)
@Monsieur - that didn't answer my question at all, because you don't know WHY they'd influence men to be muscular. You say they "want us to be that way". Why? Do
@AdamThomas Actually this trend of wanting all men to be muscular isn't a recent one... it's been around since the 90s... remember those old music video-clips with Peter Andre where he was beefed up? It's been around 20 years since this craziness started
I'm not saying they want us to be that way you moron... I'm saying the media influences what young/men and women should be like... Jeesh, get a grip.
Not everything can be blamed on the media, regardless, people have their own preferences. They also have their own ideas of what to aspire to, and what they want to look like. If they derive confidence from the size of their pecks, then who is anyone else to judge.
In addition if you want to bring evolution/history into this, in the past men had to hunt for themselves, find/follow food, climb, build their own houses etc. they must have been pretty hench. If a guy wants to use what he's got in comparison to modern men who let muscle go to waste I for one am not complaining lol.
On top of that, how can you complain about the fact that some guys want to be incredibly healthy, start ranting about obesity instead. That's a better use of time lol
I mean, I had to urbandictionary hench, but I wish people would stop implying our evolutionary ancestors had bulging muscles. Tribes-people don't, for a start. They ran after their food, and used tools and their intellects to kill, hence the cro-magnon being better adapted than the neanderthal. Of course, our ancestors were far stronger than us, but the notion that they weighed 250lbs, ate 4000 calories a day, could barely run a few miles without breaking out into a sweat fest, is pure silliness, as is the notion that it's 'incredibly healthy', which is a total myth. Lean muscle is good. Aesthetic muscle, at the expense of every indicator of health, including cardio vascular fitness, flexibility, and general internal health. is not.
Sorry to pick on you, you were the straw that broke the camel's back :)
(sorry British hahaha) Lol don't worry I take correction well. I'm just basically saying there's nothing wrong with wanting to work on your body if the person feels like it makes them look good. The guy i'm dating is lean but incredibly toned, others have been on the anesthetic side, again i'm not complaining. Could be worse, they could be fat.
well my good man at first i would have thought you jealous then i read the skinny part and good for you being proud in your own skin but the same reason why guy pretend to be muscular in pics is the same reason why chics pretend to be slender with big lips it is called peacocking where people want to look the most attractive to attract the most mates
Has nothing to do with the media. Men are made to build muscles some more than others, due to testosterone. When they were actually doing physical labor eons ago it was not an issue to have them, but now since we live a more sedentary life they go to the gym.
My testo levels are super high (as tested) ... I don't have huge muscles.
Women body builders lack testo, yet are as big as the ego of some GAG users... do you think they woke up one day and said "Hey, I'm going to get henched"? no, clearly not.
@monsieur, women actually have androgen, a type of testosterone, we can't get as big as a man, but we can develop muscles, the reason we can't is due to more that one factor, one we aren't built for that. Female bodybuilders take steroids. I guess that's the medias fault.

Further to what I wrote on PleaselllBeNiceNat's answer, I believe fear to be the motivating factor. Very few people, have the courage, to genuinely be as they naturally are, and forgo all the supposed benefits that accrue from society, be it materially; or superficially, in some form, with women. They say they do, people like to consider themselves subversive souls, but when it really comes down to it... When they hear rumblings, because you will, you will be put to the test, when you have that woman reject you, because you're not broad shouldered enough, or haven't the muscles elsewhere, can you really cope with it?
As a meditator, becoming in touch with my body and subconscious, I can see, that over-eating is not really that good for you. In the Dao de jing, it says something like, heaven knows why it detests excess, be it in the form of excess food, or extraneous activity, but it does. In the very least, it dulls your sensitivity. See for yourself.
It's ALL conditioning, practically, everything we pursue, is because of conditioning. Because of fear, as I say, of being nothing, of not being esteemed, of not owning that house, of not having that 'hot biatch', of being perceived as weak. We're all so psychologically tethered.
It's actually a combination of several factors. Media does play a part. Society plays the biggest role. Men can naturally build muscle thanks to the abundance of testosterone that they have and society in the ancient times deemed a male a man if he could build such muscle. This mentality has lasted through-out the ages. Same thing with women being seen as beautiful and graceful. Men are obsessed with building muscle because it has been ingrained in us thanks to our society that focus's on the general strengths of each sexes. Women had their strength in beauty and men had their strength in building muscle. This is generally true. Women are amazing at being beautiful and men are amazing at building muscles. These two factors for both sexes were what helped drove society forward. Men being strong and protectors and women being weak and nurturers. It's only recent times where a mans strength and a womans beauty didn't really help progress society.
Now, thanks to technology, it's our intelligence more than ever. Intelligence has always been there, but the ability to constantly use our intelligence on a daily bases by using modern technology has only arrived in the past century or so. However, tens of thousands of years of evolution that relied on the male being strong and protectors is still ingrained in us, our society, and the media just plays off of this. The media just enhances the awareness of having to look beautiful for women and being strong and muscular for men. Even though building muscle and being beautiful no longer drives our society forward. It's the same reason why it took women to come together and fight for equal rights. It's not a coincidence that womens rights movement started to gain ground once technology started to progress at a rapid rate.
We are in the age of transition. From our old barbaric selves that relied on men protecting and women nurturing to an age where anyone can protect and anyone can nurture. That's why men are still obsessed.
I used to be skinny and put on muscle and I can tell you, the confidence skyrockets not just in terms of being stronger, but overall achievement. Not many people can endure how much effort it takes when building muscle.
Now for others, it becomes an obsession. People can technically consider me obsessed going to the gym 5-6 days a week. However, some guys are like... 7 days a week 2+ hours at a time and timing their eating and such to a crazy extent and they just keep going.
If you're skinny, I highly recommend even a simple 3 days a week of muscle building. Trust me when I say it can easily be a life changer even in the most indirect fashions. You don't gotta do the ridiculous weight people try to do at all. They just get injured anyway and that's not really even for muscle.
hahahah so in other words you are somehow trying to force me build muscle. Look what one guy said in the most helpful opinion: "Because of media, and how it wants us to be. " . It's clearly a brainwashing. Just look how many internet ads pop up about "making muscles easy" or most males on TV tend to be beefed up.
I never said anything about forcing you to do anything. Assuming that is just insecure. I simply said it's recommended. There's a ton of studies showing many health benefits including cancer reduction.
If you just want to hear what you want to hear you should state that in your question.
Firstly it just feels good, it has all kinds of health benefits when done right. Secondly it looks good, which also makes you feel good and it's more attractive to women.
It makes me laugh when people say it's what "the media" wants us to be, because they never explain why, and they act as though it's evil/bad. Muscular men and slim women are in the media so much because they're the most attractive and the most healthy (apart from steroid users obviously, but I never see that encouraged). To get that way you have to eat a healthy balanced diet with little-no junk or alcohol, you have to get enough sleep etc. What's bad about encouraging that? It's a lot better than encouraging people that they're wrong and that people should just be happy with their bodies and fill it with whatever shit they like even if they're bigger than a bus.
You say muscular men and SLIM women are the most healthy... yet slim and muscular are different... so it's like saying a slim man is unhealthy... lol. And yes, when media brainwash us with muscular beefed up guys... it's like they tell us "That's the way a man MUST be"... and it makes many men trying to look like them... what's so good about it? And no yo're not strong... you're WEAK because you let the media manipulate you!!!
I didn't just sat most healthy, I also said most attractive. But like I said, without steroids it's impossible to build a muscular physique without living a healthy lifestyle, that's why they're healthier than most slim men, as plenty of them eat shit, drink etc. As for slim women, they can't get muscular without steroid use because they have 16x less testosterone than we have.
Why do you think the media brainwashes us and wants us to be this way? None of you ever answer that question.
i don't know lol... just to make gyms rich probably :-P
Why would thet give a fuck about making gyms rich? Lol, it just makes no sense to say that the media wants people to be that way for no reason at all other than "they just want to".
It is good that you are proud to be skinny.
I was skinny too.. It has been over a year that i joined gym and now i feel good because i am in good shape now.
Actually it has to do with self confidence and nothing. It makes us look good.
HEY DON'T DON'T stare at my pic because that is 3 years old pic. Lol
But my advice to guys here is that , avoid bulk bodybuilding.
2 years ago.. i was 57 kgs.( very skinny due to fever, low immunity problems and all that shit)
Now i am 75 kgs. I feel healthy and stronger than before.
Now take a look at this guy. Tell me doesn't he look more appealing than before?
www.musclemonsters.com/.../Beachbeforeafter.png
Personaly i prefer him like he was before
In the 2nd pic he looks like one of those guys media provides
As a male I started putting on muscle just because I was bored and I carried on for over a year working on my body tone and then I was caught by some girls from my school running around a field with a mate having a game of football and they told me I had a hot body but then I realised that other boys were doing it to attract girls so I didn't want to seem to be an attention seeker so I stopped (worst mistake of my life) because I stopped my body couldn't cope and I ended up putting on weight and ended up at 13 stone so I decided to start working out again to lose weight and not to attract girls.
The way I see it if a girl chooses me for my body rather than actually liking me for who I am then they can do one
i dont workout for chicks, i workout to create an aura. when i walk into a room, introduce myself to someone, go for a job interview, i love looking dominant, in charge, and in control. I love walking past and having people point and talk about me. i love the fact that when i go somewhere with thousands of people. almost all of them will remember who i am when it is over, and i didn't even have to say a word (this was the case before people knew who i was)
None of this will make sense to any of you once you get the physique and know whats its like. I know it sounds like im bragging, but think of it as driving a ferrari in real life. Why do people drive ferraris? to get attention, looks, exert dominance and superiority from the norm, and to get people talking.. but it also inspires jealousy and haters on the person driving. Thats exactly what i experience IRL
THIS IS WHY AMIGO!!! ITS A PASSION!! A LIFESTYLE!!! TILL THE DAY I DIE.
WE'RE ALL GONNA MAKE IT BRAH!!!
What I'm really saying is why be a Honda, when you can be a Bugatti (:
Shhhhhhhhhh it's ok (: BABY WE BUGATTI
I can be commanding and dominant without being a huge gym junkie though :/ ... it's all natural brah
When I see a guy with huge muscles, a huge truck, huge anything really, I think "compensation". Which is where I think that desire to be seen as superior, dominant, etc comes from.
Yeah natty 100% lel
It's a goal, it allows men to do certain tasks easier, it builds self-esteem (not by looking better, but by exerting yourself to the fullest), it allows men to feel like they are protecting their significant others (and often they are able to protect them), and it expedites the formation of a body shape that is often attractive to those sexually attracted to men.
I love building muscle, especially since I am playing college football as a defensive lineman. But I think people should just do what they want to do. Wanna be lean and love it go for it! Wanna be muscular and stocky do it! Wanna eat and don't care go for it!
As someone who has never been skinny in his life, I can say that being chunky and muscular is definitely better than being chunky and wimpy.
Female attention or no, I work out because it's one of the best ways to actually demonstrate that my effort gets me somewhere. I can track my progress on how much I can lift, how far I can run, how far I can swim, and it shows a direct correlation between effort and progress.
I think its a media thing. The hot guys are usually portrayed to be muscular. However, I'm with ya. I, not really into muscular guys.
:-) :-)
It's definitely linked to the media... Guys think that women want massive men, but more often or not they think they're fake, cocky and arrogant.
Not massive, just muscular. Women will often criticise them, true, but most bodybuilder type guys I know say they get a lot more attention from women when they're biggrr than when they're skinny. The same has been true for me the bigger I've gotten. I had a female friend who said she HATED bodybuilders, yet whenever we went out and a bodybuilder type guy started talking to her she'd be all over him.
I think this:
25.media.tumblr.com/...43zacp7CQ1r9qnmyo1_1280.jpg
You mirin' brah? Some guys do it because they think it will make a difference in getting more girs, others like myself enjoy working out and love seeing their bodies transform and being more healthy. Weightlifting has a lot of positive effects.
It's masculine.
Most girls think it looks better.
Feels nice being big, strong, and fast.
i don't have any desire of adding muscle personaly... i'd feel very weird
LOOOOOOL overall health? most guys end up with serious health problems because of their desire to add muscle by taking steroids and stuff like that ;-)
i don't know but i've heard various rumors of athletes using steroids
I can be skinny and still be healthy..
I think those guys that have all those muscles look sicking and not what a man is and looks like in real life a hard factory worker not no pencil pushing geek behind a desk that does not know what a hards days work is
For similar reasons why most don't shave their eyebrows, attempt to stunt their growth or try to lower their testosterone.
rofl... truth is that since i was a kid i had a thing to look more feminine
Yes. That's atypical.
I'm a weak guy and PROUD
YEAH!!!
@rthomas43 not at all... what if you have some rare disease that makes you build ecesive muscle mass? Should't you try hard to be weak? :-P
Guys seem to love goals. I think it tweaks your competitive side. Plus, working out circulates testosterone, which leads to more energy and confidence. Which leads to setting and reaching more goals!
I never got into packing on huge amounts of muscle, but I would really like to have lean muscle. Kind of skinny but really toned if you know what I mean.
It becomes very addictive when you become stronger and better looking and people take notice. Your overall sense of well being goes way up.
better looking? nah...
The majority seem to want the "beach body" look. AKA: "Lean and toned." They say having nothing doesn't turn them on much but too much just looks gross.
