I haven't had it, but it is expensive and prices depend on where you live.
You need to be very, very careful about who you go to. Some salons haven't been trained or even have an accreditation for it which can cause some very negative results for you, things such as severe burns or damaging skin pigmentation cells (where you end up with patches of skin with different colours). If you end up with severe burns, you're more susceptible to developing skin cancer later on.
If you're going head with it, thoroughly do your research on the company.

I've had it done and have never regretted it.
It used to be extremely costly because only dermatologists could administer laser treatment. Now there are certified beauty technicians who can do it and do a great job of it.
I got legs, arms, underarms, and upper lip done for $2000 for the entire treatment (6 sessions). Only have had to go back once to have a touch-up on upper lip.
Some places offer payment in installments. It's worth checking it out.
I had it done on my face, I had alopecia and just decided to have it removed rather than shave every day since I would no longer have the option to grow a beard in. The whole face minus eyebrows of course ran $95
won't recommend it on bikini hair. some guys like it and the trend changes every year.

I've done it and yes it's pricey but I think it's a great investment. I've gone to places that specializes in lasering... Usually most skincare/spa place do them. All of them were nurses trained in lasering.
Each area of the body has different pricing.
From what I rememeber, my legs cost $140, armpits $30, bikini $30-40, arms $40 for each session. I went about 5/6 times.Learningthegame16 gave you excellent advice. If you do decide to have it done, make sure you go to a reputable doctor/technician.
And it isn't a permanent solution--the hair will eventually grow back. It's expensive but might be worth it. It depends on the area but your bikini area would cost about 400
omg. It costs so much I just can't. I mean, on a scale of one to even, I can't.
I think you are right, in the long run laser treatment is cheaper.
